We watched Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story recently, and it was fun to hear my kids laugh throughout one of my favorite holiday movies, a well-told story by a radio legend. Watching Ralphie listening to the radio stirred vague memories of tuning into Jean Shepherd's radio show, with my family riveted to his every word. But it also reminded me of the only time as a kid I remember being riveted to the radio instead of the TV: Christmas Eve, listening to the NORAD sightings of Santa on his marathon gift run.
NORAD's Santa tracking operation moved onto the web in 1998, and kids and parents can go to the NORAD Tracks Santa web site and track the big fella's movements in six languages. The story goes that NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) got involved in Santa's movements after its predecessor, CONAD (Continental Air Defense Command), got calls about Santa's whereabouts after Sears & Roebuck mistakenly misprinted a Santa hotline telephone number in newspaper ads in 1955. The commander who answered the first child's call gave out the requested info, and a tradition was born. When CONAD became NORAD, the bi-national air defense command for the United States and Canada in 1958, it took over the duties of tracking Santa's around-the-world flight.
Kids can check out the Santa webcams that "capture images of Santa and the Reindeer as they make their journey around the world."
My kids have also liked the Santa at Claus.com web site, where they can check if they've been naughty or nice. But they have grown suspicious in the past when some of the same phrases popped up after they put in different friends' names. (As always, this is a good teachable moment to tell young kids not to put in full names or other personal information if they send an e-mail to Santa.)

It's all about the spirit of Santa. Please.....!!! Be a little bit positive!! It's a good thing.
Guess my last post didn't work! Its Christmas its suppose to be earths time for healing and tolerance for others! Peace on earth and good will to all! But instead we get arses on here messing up the spirit of Christmas for our kids. All this posting was created for is comments on NORADs tracking of Santa. YES KIDS HE IS REAL!!! and we track him every year and he always comes and he always leaves us presents of tolerance and peace for the new year. All I can say I feel very sorry for those that don't believe, but belief is human nature, its up to us how we use it and project it. Merry Christmas to those who still have HOPE in their hearts!
why is everyone fighting about this. if i were you tell your kids that santa is real because a guy that brings them gifts also brings them joy.
cmon! its for the little kids -_- geez get over it
Santa represents the goodness in man kind
even little kids can use the internets... to find out the truth... that Santa helped Bush do the 9/11 attacks.
it is always better to be kind then right...
Sad, that you people act the way that you do. You are depressed and have no hope in life, so you have to ruin the lives of others. We lie to children quiet a bit, where do babies come from is the biggest... Blackmail? children get rewarded for doing good things through out the year, not "be good or santa's gonna kill you" and there are a ton of athiest who believe in santa, Christianity has nothing to do with it. 2nd, Bin Ladin is a hard guy to find, Santa comes out in the open, so let the children have fun enjoying the time they watch santa circle the globe instead of who kills who. If you want to act immature and destroy the hopes and dreams of children then fine, there is no stopping you, but may the Grace of God save you for your rudeness
i think it's wrong to tell kid's santa is real when he is nothing more then a myth!!
how pathetic to bring in ignorant statements when it comes to something as simple and childlike as Santa. Apparently some of you weren't ever children.
It makes me so sad that people have nothing better then to sit around and ruin one of the things that young kids can still belive in. Maybe when all you sorry people have kids and you see the excitment in their eyes on christmas morning it is something so magical. I dont go to church my kids know nothing about god, but they belive in santa, and when they ask if he is real i tell them he is real if you belive he is. If my 9 yr old ever saw this crap that you are writing she would be heart broken, not because of saying santa isnt real but the nasty things you are typung and the horrible things that you are saying about something they have such good memories of. All of you saying this crap should be censored.
I know Christmas is suppose to be the rememberance of Jesus's birth, but what I was trying to express in the last comment I made it what he tried to do all his short life. Santa is what any kid of no matter what race or even age believe in, because he represents giving and there is no much real giving in the human race left. We can stamp on faith in humanity or we can imbrace what hope and love we have left. Santa has always been the representation of that. He is real in spirit, as hope and caring for others. If I am wrong with bring up my kids to believe in humanity, hope and love I am sorry, but to me and many others its right.
Santa is real to those who have the spirit. Its just a idea that takes hold of the heart and makes children happy. Im one of those that didnt turn into a killer because my parents lied to me. I have great memerys of Christmas and always will. Things really sucki in this world but the spirit of Chrismas is and will always be for the young and old.
What is wrong with all of you? Christmas is a magical time of year. I would say that people that leave rantings are the ones that are ruining Christmas. What does 9/11 have to do with Christmas. If anything we should be thinking of those that will be without their loved ones and sending them our thoughts and prayers, not leaving ignorant comments about Norad and the President. Merry Christmas to all that believe. I have 2 small children and we will be tracking Santa, singing Christmas and thinking of those that aren't with their families this holiday season.
To the 56 year old MR Scroodge BAAAAAAAAAA HUMBUG
I dont know why people distroy others dreams, or good feelings...you had no kidsroom or what... Santa is a real person, maybe not here , but somewhere...
for the skeptics our there who do not believe in santa and your sad, sad, sad lives - i don't believe that the santa "lie" as you call it is what screwed you up in the first place....hum..
Wow look at all the people bashing NORAD when I am sure you have no idea what their actual mission is. I can tell you it is not to track Bin Laden. Ever hear the phrase "If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all"?? Christmas is a time for giving. Maybe if everyone spent a little more time doing that the world would be a much better place. Merry Christmas to everyone young and old!!
besides, he's real 'cause i saw him at the mall with my three year old.
