Cordless Phone Quandry Part 2: Plugged in but not perfect

We plugged the Uniden DXAI 5588-2 in.

My 10-year-old did most of the hooking up, and it went very smoothly. The message announcement quality is a little tinny, muffled. That may be what I get for not opting for an over-$100 digital phone model. I can live with that if this phone works for more than two years.

So far, so good, but on the first day we noticed one glitch: When you answer a call on one handset, someone can't join in on the call on the other. That flaw wasn't mentioned in any reviews I found before buying. Is this an oddity, or the standard for multi-handset cordless phones?
