Here's an interesting read from The Consumerist for anyone who will be buying a new cell phone and service plan from Verizon Wireless sometime soon.
A former Verizon Wireless sale rep wrote the consumer web site with tips for consumers to get better deals than you'd think possible just by reading the phone price tags and service contract costs. It all boils down to haggling with the sales rep, something many of us may not think to do in a cell phone service store.
Read all "eight confessions," but here are a few prime tips:
• Negotiate a better price on the phone of your choice by agreeing to buy accessories and the text message plan. Then, return the accessories and cancel the text package over the phone with customer service. The sales rep get props for selling accessories and plan add-ons.
• If you're on a service plan that costs $59.99 a month, you can get a new phone and a new contract after 12 months, not two years.
• Here's one I wish I had known: If you're getting a Palm Treo, the store may be offering $100 off the phone if you sign up for the unlimited data plan. Get it, then switch to a different data plan the next day over the phone. The data plans are not contractual.
Seems to me any request is worth a shot because you never know what the sales reps are trying to push on a certain day, but these are good tips to remember when you do your own haggling.
Have you got some cell phone service negotiating tips of your own? Please share!

Duh. None of those "tips" is a secret, it's all laid out for you by Verizon Wireless if you pay attention. PS, sign up for MyAccount and you'll get Minute Check, annual upgrade if your plan is $49.99 or higher, and free Backup Assistant. The Advance Device Discount (that extra $100 bucks off a PDA or Blackberry?) That's not a secret either...none of these "tips" are inside information, they are out there for you to take advantage of...Oh, and PS? Be careful buying off sites like Wirefly. They have their own rules re: insurance, warranty, and all those other things people take for granted when they buy their phones from Verizon Wireless. All told, i was EXTREMELY unimpressed with this article. Garbage.
Again I say, what use is a Phone to me with just a Simon Card and Not even a Carrier? This to me sound like a waste of my cash directly.
Thanks for ruining a good thing...start the count down clock for when verizon stops offering commissions to sales reps...
You can haggle over plan pricing. With the introduction to Cricket in San Diego, I called my carrier Sprint and was ready to cancel service. They reduced the price of my plan, gave me more text and had more minutes than I ever use. I went from paying $72 a month to $53 after taxes. I got more at a lower price. It does work.
as usual yahoo has an unfinished colum.
How do you get out of a contract. The imbicils at T-Mobil forced me into extending for two years or waiting for 4 to 5 days before replacing a phone on warrenty. Mike?
Metro pcs is the best if they are in your area. Pay by the month not the minute . They have a flat rate per month and no suprises . I am in the Detroit area and it is great to have reasonable pricing and great service !
I don't know who this guy is, but I can see why he is not a rep anymore. He is giving completely false info to customers. Just to point out a few: If you cancel the unlimited data package on a pda the next day, you will not get your $100 rebate. And if you are on a two year contract, you will not get a new phone at a reduced price until 21 months of the contract is completed. Please pay no attention to this article, it is filled with falsehoods.
signmesunshine, you sure do get wound up.Moral decay? This is a god-danged cell phone we are talking about darnIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Better yet forget all those companies and get a tracfone! lol I never get a dropped call, reception is 10 times better plus you don't get screwed over!
forget verizon, go with cingular, and buy a refurbished model, which, are close to the current models offered, and can be had for less than 40.00...i paid 35.00 for mine, its a motorola, and while it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, it is perfectly suitable for most of us.
kslickfox, if buying over the 'net becomes so popular that it puts everyone out of a job, it means that they were doing the job poorly, inefficiently, or BOTH. Instead of whining, let the market take its course.
Bought my Motorola SLVR L7 (iTunes enabled, came with 512 mb memory card, and everything needed to play music) for .01 on cartoys' website, WITH a $50 rebate. Signed up for the cheapest plan on cingular and voila. Car Toys PAID ME $50 to buy their phone, and replaced my mp3 player in one fell swoop.
"keep buying on the net pretty soon everything will be overseas and not in your local areas, this means jobs lost, maybe yours next." dude thats just stupid. Who do you think processes those orders at the online stores? Runs the websites? the day to day operations of those businesses?
I work for a wireless company as well and just to inform everyone if you purchase any of the extra features like ( unlimited data, 7 o clock nights, unlimited text etc) or any other promotion that offers any sort of rebates, there are small terms and conditions. Alot of stores these days make you sign a secondary store agreement/contract that is not affiliated with any of the wireless company which means the contract is between the consumer and the wireless store not the wireless company. This contact will state that if you cancel the promo plans that you got discounts for, either you will not receive the rebates or you will authorize them to charge you on your credit card for the early termination of that promo deal. So be careful on what you sign in these stores, make sure you read everything from A-Z!

It just shows that companies are scum and are not really giving the best deals possible
Hey these are some good tips. Does anyone know of any tips for T-Mobile? I have the Get More Plan that includes 600 anytime minutes. You have to pay $6.99 for Mobile to Mobile & extra for 400 text messages, so I'm looking at from a $39.99 plan to around $62 after taxes. How can I get the better deal? Thanks
