Here's an interesting read from The Consumerist for anyone who will be buying a new cell phone and service plan from Verizon Wireless sometime soon.
A former Verizon Wireless sale rep wrote the consumer web site with tips for consumers to get better deals than you'd think possible just by reading the phone price tags and service contract costs. It all boils down to haggling with the sales rep, something many of us may not think to do in a cell phone service store.
Read all "eight confessions," but here are a few prime tips:
• Negotiate a better price on the phone of your choice by agreeing to buy accessories and the text message plan. Then, return the accessories and cancel the text package over the phone with customer service. The sales rep get props for selling accessories and plan add-ons.
• If you're on a service plan that costs $59.99 a month, you can get a new phone and a new contract after 12 months, not two years.
• Here's one I wish I had known: If you're getting a Palm Treo, the store may be offering $100 off the phone if you sign up for the unlimited data plan. Get it, then switch to a different data plan the next day over the phone. The data plans are not contractual.
Seems to me any request is worth a shot because you never know what the sales reps are trying to push on a certain day, but these are good tips to remember when you do your own haggling.
Have you got some cell phone service negotiating tips of your own? Please share!

to get a new phone after a year you have to sign up for my account online. you won't get the big discounts like if you waited the full 2 years, but you can upgrade at a pretty good price. i know, i'm a tech in the stores. if you ask someone to explain the "worry free guarantee" they will explain that to you.

1)By all means when u go on wirefly.com this is what u get a litle better pricing on the phn maybe even a free phn "BUT"...it's all with mail in rebate so don't be fooled , there's a couple of charges ,$9.99 just for processing your orders, than another $25 or $30 buck just for activation and lucky you will get all the features posible that exeist on your phone without puting it in your shopping cart. So when u get ur first bill ...u'll start speaking -gagagagga . 2) Anytime you purchase a phone from any indirect channels (meaning not ur carrier corporate store) you have no options. So if you get a DOA (dead on arrival unit) from the website ,you have to send it back pay for shipping mostly than u have to wait forever for them to send you back another phn. Also if u already used any phn for more than 100 min most indirect channel(web sites, mall store) will not exchange your phn . 3) Phns normally have 1 year manufactury warranty which if u buy it at a corporate store they can exchange it easily if not again the mail thing. Best way to negociate is with customer svc over the phn. and if you don't get what u wanted ask for a supervisor. 1 out of 10 sups give up (they have a quota so doesn't hurt to try)They don't like it when u call over and over so when u do they will bend the rule . The worst place to get robbed at is the indirect stores at the mall.Chances are that they will sell u a brand new phn "used by 4 different custumers already and sometimes even a year old "
True about the adding text/data & canceling it the next day. But what you don't realize is that whatever you cancel the sales rep gets charged back for. So you're really not doing them any favors. Not that many people really care though.
Trust me it all depends on who your talking to. The trick is getting a sales rep that connects with you, once you can connect with then then you usually get great deals. I bought my palm treo at a great price and great discounts on my accessories. Also if you work for a company make sure let them know. The sales reps have a list of all companies of who they give discounts to with employees. Most of the time if you have a company e-mail you half way there.
I went to a cell provider to sign up for a contract. When it came to phone time I suprised the sales rep when she asked me what kind of phone I wanted and I told her that I wanted the cheapest one they had in house. While I was sitting there filling out the paper work I noticed a saleswoman talking to an elderly customer trying to sell them a Razor. You know just as well as I do that the customer had no idea what they were getting or what they needed. So the point I'm making is DO NOT let the salesperson push you into buying something. If you want just a basic phone to just call people and no other bells and whistles then do like I did and tell the sales rep that you want the cheapest phone in house. That way you know that your getting a good deal and know exactly what your getting.
