Microsoft Wants To Kill The iPod

Reports that Microsoft is planning to release an MP3 player that would rival the iPod continue to circulate. Microsoft hopes to accomplish this difficult feat by releasing a music/video player equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities that downloads music on-the-go, and without a computer connection. The New York Times says the players are expected to be in stores before the holidays, as reported by entertainment industry executives who where briefed this week.

An Engadget reader managed to snap some blurry pictures of what appears to be the said player, although this has not been confirmed. An Engadget "trusted insider" also adds that Microsoft also plans to convert iPod lovers by offering free downloads of any songs you have purchased through iTunes Music Store. That means Microsoft will pay for the songs you purchased through iTunes to earn your business. Wow! I hope this is true, because it will benefit customers who are ready to move to another MP3 player.

What do you think? Are you ready to adopt another music player or will you be sticking to your iPod?

bah, apple's only decent product was the ipod, (and i use the term decent lightly), they get smaller in size and usefulness and still are expensive compared to the others in the market. microsoft is a great corporation and has had few sub-standard products (windows ME for example). i'll definitely buy one if it lives up to the hype.

Considering Microsoft's continuing penchant for antitrust tactics INTERNATIONALLY, I for one am in no hurry to help a company whichpays fines for such activities and blatantly continues to commit them. (There is healthy competition and then there is Microsoft. They obviously have not been penalized enough.)

I want a MP3 player that does what it claims and does it well. I've tried other players and the iPod is the best for what it's trying to do. Also helps with the accessories for the iPod. My Scion TC came with an iPod adapter, it's fantastic as well as everyone of my friends. Also the little digital adapter that allows me to transfer photos from my digital card and use the iPod as temp storage when on a photo shoot, if i happen to fill my memory cards. The device works seemlessly with iTunes. And the iPod/iTunes combo plays equally well in both Windows and Macintosh machines! Other MP3 devices will work with Mac's, however no store aside from iTunes, and eMusic will work on the Macintosh platform. Microsoft stopped creating their media player for Macintosh. I'd think that was more closed than Apples. I personally think Microsoft is more frustrated with Apple over mp3 and music stores than it is with firefox, and google. They are not used to not getting their way. Aside from xBox, microsoft have not truely designed or have come out with a software package that has been amazing, or have changed the world. They have bought companies with such products and incorporated the software into their own. But Microsoft has not been innovative on their own. They buy their marketshare into new areas. Their hyped device sounds like a jack of all trades, and a master of none! I've seen/witnessed listend to at least 10 labels of iPod killers, and iTunes killers. Each and everyone not so good. People don't understand elegance, simplicity, and fashion get to the hearts of peoples emotions and they will buy and stay. To the companies who are whining why not invest heavily in marketing, and create a store that works perfectly with devices. That's the largest issue, and stop pushing renting music. Whats the point.
