Nike + Sport Armband Review

After purchasing the Nike + iPod Sports Kit this weekend, I was forced to purchase the additional Nike + Sport Armband. Why? Because my old Nike Sports Armband doesn't fit the Nike + iPod Sports Kit receiver that attaches to the iPod Nano.

I wasn't happy about the extra purchase because the Nike + Ready shoes and Sports Kit had already set me back $130. Unfortunately, the Nike + Sport Armband was another $29, and I personally did not care too much for it. For starters, the new Nike + Sport Armband has velcro on each end, compared to the first seamless, form-fitting Nike Sports Armband relased last year. Being able to slip on the armband without worrying about accidental falls was nice.

One of the reasons I dislike this velcro closure is because I almost dropped my nano a few times when I had to take off the armband to check my workout stats. Most armbands I've owned in the past had a safety mechanism that would allow you to insert one velcro end into a belt loop so you don't drop your player.

Other than that, the armband has a protruding center button, and has labeled iPod controls. It fits both the iPod nano and the receiver perfectly, and since you need to press the center button while using the Nike + iPod Sports Kit, having an easy to press center button certainly helps. Otherwise, you would be hitting other buttons that would only be pausing your workout.

Did you try the iPod Nano-with-receiver in the old armband? I don't have one, but was reading iLounge's much better review of the old armband, and that wishing I had one to use with my Sport Kit--and it looked from their pictures as if the cutout in the bottom of the armband would leave enough room for the receiver to poke out. But it definitely doesn't?

Yes, I did try the old armband with the reciever sticking out of the bottom. It's not bad, but I think I would have problems pressing other buttons when trying to find the center button. I'd say if you have the old Nike Armband, just stick with that. If you find you need constant updates during your runs, then get the new armband. I think someone suggested inserting a piece of foam over the center button so you can find it easily (when using the old armband), but that's really up to you.

You don't undo the velcro evertime you take it on or off. You find a comfrotable fit then slide just like the last one. gooooosh

I have a clear acrylic case for my iPod nano. Do you know if the case will easily slip into the armband? Or will I have to take it out of the case each time?

melenheads04: I think you'll have to take it out. The armband is stretchy, but I doubt there's enough room for an acrylic case. You also need to have access to the center button if you want updates regularly. scott_48074: That's exactly what I do, but I can't help using the velcro every now and then to do a quick release. If it's there, they will use it.
