Anyone who knows me knows my love for music. I can honestly say I know the lyrics to almost every pop song I ever heard growing up in the 80s and 90s. Most of the time, I read the lyrics printed on the CD booklet, and later, thanks to digital downloads, I looked them up online. The problem with lyrics published online was they were transcribed by users of the site, and most of the time the lyrics were completely off. That might explain why you often hear people singing the wrong words to a song—myself included.
The Yahoo! Music blog says most of the lyrics published on these unreliable sites were never legal. Apparently, the music publishing industry alone owns the rights to these lyrics but have been slow to legally distribute them on the Internet. Yahoo! Music, in partnership with Gracenote, has finally launched the first massive legal lyric repository on the Internet. Now you can find lyrics to more than 400,000 songs on Yahoo! Music next to the artist bio, discographies, videos, and downloads. The database includes over 9,000 artists ranging from The Beatles to Snoop Dogg.
The service is free, the lyrics are official, and you never have to run a virus scan after visiting those shady lyric sites ever again. Sounds good to me!Â
