Reality TV has paved the way for some pretty cool shows such as The Real World, Survivor, and most recently American Idol. American Idol alone has discovered a handful of new artists who are now selling millions of albums, have gone on Broadway, and one of them (Jennifer Hudson) even won an Oscar. But could the next president be discovered on MySpace?
Mark Burnett, the producer behind Survivor and The Apprentice, is cooking up another reality show this time searching for the next great politician. Variety reports he's partnering with MySpace for an online project they hope will become a full-fledged TV series. The show is yet to be pitched around to the networks, but so far they plan to air it on MySpace's new "Impact" channel, which aims to get young people involved in politics.
Roy Bank, development head for Burnett Productions, says Independent is "the American Idol of political action. Here political hopefuls will be given a chance to be considered after submitting a video application on MySpace. If chosen as a candidate, they must campaign on and off MySpace, which means they'll also be required to interact with the public like real politicians. They'll receive feedback via an interactive town hall environment from the MySpace community, and from viewers of the show. One winner will be awarded a $1 million price that he/she must either donate to a political cause or use it to run for office, which doesn't have to be the presidency either. If picked up, the show will air sometime next year. This will be an interesting show to watch.
