With so much new technology emerging every day, it was only a matter of time before schools began to accept it into their classrooms. After all, technology is a big part of a student's life. When I was in high school, it was fairly uncommon to see students with cell phones or laptops on school grounds—even though these tools were readily available. Today, most kids in school have a cell phone, and the situation has gotten so out of control that schools are already moving towards banning them in the classroom. Besides being disruptive, cell phones and other technology are also being used to [gasp!] cheat .
Cheating is common among students—that's no big secret; but when you hear about kids paying thousands of dollars to pass a test, well that's when you know students are seriously under pressure. Desperate students in Vietnam, paid over $3,000 for an elaborate setup consisting of wigs and shirts wired to mobile phones that would allow them to cheat on their college entrance exams. According to ABC News, police also confiscated mobile phones, earphones, and SIM cards that were used to call in test questions and answers.
It's no surprise to hear that this is a global epidemic, and that students are finding new ways to cheat via text messaging, cameraphones, email, PDAs, iPods, and Bluetooth technology. But none of these are quite as ripe with cheating possibility as the Internet. If you head on over to Superiorpapers.com. or Masterpapers.com, you'll find a whole team of people at your disposal who are more than willing to write thesis papers or even doctoral dissertations for a few dollars. The sites operate like any other business offering customer support, money back guarantees, and a toll-free number.
So why are students going to such technological extremes to make the grade? A USA Today's article "Study examines why students cheat" may gives us some insight as to why all the cheating. After one college professor discovered that 47 of his 64 students had cheated on a take-home exam, he and another professor decided to survey the cheating students, and found that, while they knew cheating was wrong, they rationalized their behavior by putting the blame on the system, the environment, the context, and even the professor. Some of them said "they were simply taking advantage of technological opportunities." Many students also try to justify their cheating saying they are too busy juggling jobs, extracurricular activities, and want high GPAs or time to spend with friends and family.
But just like students, teachers also have the power of the Internet at their disposal. Teachers can find sites like Turnitin.com, where they can check the originality of their student's work. Submitted papers are compared against more than 15 million papers on a database, as well as other sources on the Internet. But the biggest problem may be a teacher's ignorance of high-tech cheating. At one high school, out of 19 teachers polled, "only two were aware that students use text-messaging to cheat." Most teachers didn't grow up with this technology, so it's no shock that they don't really understand how it works.
So my question is to the teachers out there: what is the most outrageous form of cheating you've encountered? And what can teachers and parents do to prevent high-tech cheating?

too eazy...
To The comment stating that "students should just do their best on the test and if they get a bad grade they know what they need to work on. This is impossible in today's schools." Tests in most of my classes are 40% of the grade, Tests shouldn't be that important. You're always going to have resources available if you don't know the answer to something right away in the real world and when are you really going to need to know how to rationalize x squared times the fourth root of 6 or something?? People just need to get over it. It's 2007, times have changed from when most of you were in school, walking through 5 feet of snow barefoot, never missing a day of school even if you were dieing blah blah all that bull. grow up and deal with it, cell phones are a part of our society now. adapt. Whoever said kids under the age of 18 don't need cell phones needs a reality check. Yes, it's ridiculous to give a 10 year old a cell phone but when the kid is 15 and 16 and out driving you better believe they need a cell phone, i've gotten lost and needed to call for directions or tell my parents i'll be home a little later, etc. Cell phones should be allowed in school simply for the fact that kids are texting anywayy! behind their books, in their pockets, holding it beside them so the teacher doesnt see, it's more distracting trying to hide it than it would be to just have it out, text what you need to text and be done with it. But the point is, we're doing it anyway!!! they're complaining about "theft, distractions, declining grades" hello, WE ARE USING PHONES!!!, has their been any declining grades? increased theft? distractions?? other than the ocasional cell phone going off, where yes that phone needs to be taken away for the hour. As for the cheating? Who cares. Homework, we're going to find ways to cheat, Tests, we're going to find ways to cheat. For me it's not because i'm lazy, I pay attention in class and I make A's and B's but some of the stuff you just don't remember, and when the test you're taking is 40% of your grade it puts a lot of pressure on you. With the outrageous costs of college you need scholarships, you needs A's to get scholarships. thanks to bushtards "no child left behind" act, more kids ARE getting left behind because they're getting worse and worse grades because schools have to give us more tests and with the increased amount of tests there are more and more changes to fail. Way to go there Dubya. Tests don't work, we memorize for the grade then forget. Get better teachers that make us WANT to learn, make us want to pay attention. Not just stand up there and lecture for 45 minutes. Besides, my stupid phones camera shutter sound can't be turned off so i can't take pics of tests :P. Point is: Cell phones in school: yes No Child Left Behind: yet another of bush for brains horrid mistakes. Tests: useless pick your battles people you have a retarded president. FIX THAT, then go after cell phones.
If the teacher isn't too lazy... they should give each kid a quiz with the questions in a different order. That way the most common cheat ie: answer to question 2 is B.... doesn't work. Also, dump the multichoice format and require answers to be written in complete english sentences. Maybe you can prevent young america from being both as corrupt and stupid as their parents.... but good luck with that at this point.
