Gadgets Are A Girl's Best Friend

True or False? You visit electronic stores more often than shopping malls.

If you think this statement is somewhat true, you're not alone. USA Today investigates the results of an Oxygen Network survey that indicates more women would choose electronics, such as iPods, TVs, or cell phones, over silly things like diamond necklaces or designer shoes. Not only do girls want their high-tech toys, but they want the top-of-the-line models.

The survey aimed to compared tech attitudes between men and women, so they interviewed over 1,400 women and 700 men, ages 15-49. Findings suggest that advertisers need to address a broader audience, and not talk down to women.

By talking down to women, I suppose they mean that literally as well as to say, "don't make a pink version of every gadget out there to get my attention." There's a lot of mixed feelings among women in regards to pink gadgets. While young women love their pink handsets, mature women prefer theirs in a more subdued shade, yet a recent survey indicates that a large number of women want to have some sort of color choice. Personalization is huge, not only because it's fun, but also because they want to differentiate their items.

I personally don't think manufacturers introduce pink gadgets to antagonize women, I think they understand there's a massive market for pink gadgets, and being the business brains that they are, they will cater to that segment of the population. The pink RAZR alone alone sold over 600,000 units last Christmas.

It was also clear that women want to learn about the benefits of technology with less focus on specifications, and the majority clearly understands that they don't give themselves enough credit when it comes to their tech savviness.

While specifications are good to know, not everyone understands their meaning in real world terms. How do you explain megapixels, gigabytes or bandwidth to your grandma or someone who didn't grow up with technology?  Technology is complicated, so companies should make every effort to translate these terms for non-techies. I'd love to see more tech-translations on websites and in stores. Apple is one of the few companies that tells its customers that a 4GB iPod will fit over 1,000 songs. Now that works for me, and the rest of the world who has to explain how many songs fit in 4GB iPods.

One thing is for sure, women do influence buying decisions in the house. So if women are spending more than $65 billion dollars on electronics each year, they surely must have a good understanding of technology.

Women, do you agree with this survey? Tell me what you think.

The whole world has become to wrapped up in technology and one day there will a major meltdown and no one will no what to do with out their cell phone, laptop or ipod. Therefore people should really stop and think about whether or not all this technical crap is any good at all. What would you do if you couldn't log on to your fave website for a week because the internet was down? Or what would you do if you couldn't sit in a restaurant and gab on the phone while ignoring your dinner guests? That would be a crime wouldn't it? I'm only 31 years old and I feel that nowadays technology is just going to far!!

If I had enough money to keep up with all the new stuff that comes out every other week it seems, then sure. I'd love to shop more for gadgets than clothes. But clothes are a big thing for me too... I just love 'em. But like I said, haven't got the money anyway!

If there is a gadget out there, and it comes in pink or preferrably purple, I would choose it specifically so that it says "mine" as opposed to "ours." My things often get mixed in with my husband's, and it can get frustrating at times. I recently purchased an entire tool kit of pink hand tools - ridiculous? Okay, a little. But I will *always* know where the tools are (in their matching pink tool bag), and not have to hunt through my husband's tool shop to find a hammer or a screwdriver. We often end up with identical cell phones - so identical that sometimes he will leave on a business trip with my phone in tow. The next time our contracts allow for inexpensive upgrades, I will definitely consider a different color option to personalize "mine."

i agree with the survey because i loove pink but that does not mean that every girl likes pink. also about girls and technoligy i can speak for everyone but i know a lot of stuff about computers but with the world today when i have children they are probably going to know more about technoligy than i will. like i do know with me and my mom she always ask me to help her on the computer. all the new gadgets are fun and all but people are just buying them to look popular and cool sincerly marissa 12

I think that most all girls love the idea of fashion through technology. We all want our gadgets, but (most) girls want it to look fashionable as well as functional.

I never really thought of that until I saw this blog. It's totally true. I'm a teenage girl and I like designer things but it seems like a waste of money because those useless things quickly go out of season. I rather spend my money on a brand new iPod then anythings else. Kudos to you!

I totally agree. I'm that type who loves all the new and improved technology but has no clue what a gigabyte or a megabyte actually is! I totally am attracted to pretty colors on cell phones and ipods. i also love love love diamonds on them!! Oh, and by the way, you are much more likely to find me shopping at Neimans than at a technology store. thats just weird!

hmmmmm...latley i'v been into pinks because the colour does stand out quite abit. i was always fond of making statements and standing out...pink is just another way to do so, and the electronics in pink are just another way to sell to the youth of america. i think everyone is just making a big deal over something that doesnt even exist.

Nice survey that you have in there . Me myself I am a fashionable woman (depends on the mood ) I do buy nice clothes , shoes & all. But I am also a technical Support for a big ISP I tend to be techy and would just love to to use my gadgets - may it be mp3,my palm, my laptop , my computers , my very own network. Well, as I can see the tech- business have recognize already the way the woman influences the buying habits of each household. Why me being a single woman for the age of 23 - I buy my own stuff and I pay my own bill so basically . The trends, fashion, fad affects me as much. And also most of my collegues are in the same wavelenght with me --- so we tend to shop around gadgets. And when it comes to terminologies - well we tend to be very good at the specification(comes with the type of work that we have) . When we go shopping and look at the gadgets we tend to discuss the specifications and capacity of the gadgets if its good or not .We usually discuss it in our mails as well. And well, we dont just discuss gadgets we have we discuss the latest fashion and whats the latest in the bookstore ( with regards to the sales ) and all of the courses that we have. Most my collegues have graduated in college and are even taking masters ... some now in PHD at the age of 23 ;-) hehe so the business shoudnt under estimate the type of market like us . We influence it that much . Muwah . Thanks a lot for the article . Keep it up!!!

Fashion and beauty products will always be perennial favorites for women but I do agree that more and more women are appreciating techie gadgets compared to the previous generation. In fact, like designer clothes, high-tech gadgets serves as status symbols particularly with female young professionals aspiring to climb or climbing the corporate ladder, aside from being a necessity for them to perform their jobs. Besides, for young single women its one avenue for attracting men ;).

I think most girls like the look of pink objects. They think they're pretty, cute, or cool. They like showing it off and rubbing it in other peoples faces.
