True or False? You visit electronic stores more often than shopping malls.
If you think this statement is somewhat true, you're not alone. USA Today investigates the results of an Oxygen Network survey that indicates more women would choose electronics, such as iPods, TVs, or cell phones, over silly things like diamond necklaces or designer shoes. Not only do girls want their high-tech toys, but they want the top-of-the-line models.
The survey aimed to compared tech attitudes between men and women, so they interviewed over 1,400 women and 700 men, ages 15-49. Findings suggest that advertisers need to address a broader audience, and not talk down to women.
By talking down to women, I suppose they mean that literally as well as to say, "don't make a pink version of every gadget out there to get my attention." There's a lot of mixed feelings among women in regards to pink gadgets. While young women love their pink handsets, mature women prefer theirs in a more subdued shade, yet a recent survey indicates that a large number of women want to have some sort of color choice. Personalization is huge, not only because it's fun, but also because they want to differentiate their items.
I personally don't think manufacturers introduce pink gadgets to antagonize women, I think they understand there's a massive market for pink gadgets, and being the business brains that they are, they will cater to that segment of the population. The pink RAZR alone alone sold over 600,000 units last Christmas.
It was also clear that women want to learn about the benefits of technology with less focus on specifications, and the majority clearly understands that they don't give themselves enough credit when it comes to their tech savviness.
While specifications are good to know, not everyone understands their meaning in real world terms. How do you explain megapixels, gigabytes or bandwidth to your grandma or someone who didn't grow up with technology? Technology is complicated, so companies should make every effort to translate these terms for non-techies. I'd love to see more tech-translations on websites and in stores. Apple is one of the few companies that tells its customers that a 4GB iPod will fit over 1,000 songs. Now that works for me, and the rest of the world who has to explain how many songs fit in 4GB iPods.
One thing is for sure, women do influence buying decisions in the house. So if women are spending more than $65 billion dollars on electronics each year, they surely must have a good understanding of technology.
Women, do you agree with this survey? Tell me what you think.

of course. gadgets are more useful. Woman want things they can use daily. why would you think otherwise?
I love my pink razr. But i didnt buy it because it was pink. I bought it because i wanted a razr and happened to like the color pink.
lyke omg me and my friend courtney were lyke just talkign abuot this!! we were all lyke "y'know i love my celly more than halter top and diamond neckless!" de ja vu! but its nawt lyke i even understand hw 2 use anythign tht i buy, i mean, that would be soooo unatractive!
I have a Nokia 6255i with a pink bling bling case and a pink bluetooth from my boyfriend. He loads my phone with all kinds of cool applications as gifts. I would rather get this stuff than flowers that are going to die in a few days. I have an engagement ring but I know the phone and other electronics he has given me are worth more. He knows that I am excited about new technology and that I enjoy learning new things. Spices up our relationship quite a bit. Finally a man that understands me!
At the age of 56, I certainly do appreciate the tech world. I have my palm pilot, cell phone, and my newly aquired MP3 player. One comment I do agree with is that all "girls" should be thinking about their future, as in money for later on. I wish I had! Another is that it's clear our young folks aren't able to spell or use the english language properly. Personally it scares me because I feel that kids are learning so much about using technology and not learning the basics - like language and spelling. Learn this stuff girls or you'll continue to come across as airheads. It's not all about clothes, shoes and jewelry when the rubber hits the road.
I agree that women love technology. That is the first thing I look at in newspapers, magazines, etc. I may not take an ipod over a diamond, but a lightweight, fast, wireless ready laptop... I will take that over a diamond necklace (but not over a 2 carat diamond ring)!!!!
I get e-mails about the "good old day"! Please!!!! These are the best days. Sure, life may be more fast paced, but new technology has made our lives so much better. I love it that I can take pics with my phone and then e-mail them not to mention all the other cool stuff you can do with the new phones. Every time new technology comes out that improves our lives and makes it easier I always think, "Wow! Life is so much better now."
hey, sylviaortiz, you say nobody on here can spell.. but did you mean "safe your life" or was that suppose to be "save your life". Maybe it's not your spelling, but your proofreading and keyboarding that needs work. Not to criticize, but instead to show you have work to do too.
I think for me, this is very true. A diamond nowadays, is useless to me. Sure it'll look wonderfull, but can it hold my 30 GB music library? Nope! Technology is moving fast and women don't want to be left in the dust!I found this interesting because just yesterday I went to Sports Chalet to see if they have the new Nike shoes compatable with the Ipod nano sensor for runners (http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/ ). The sales man had NO clue what I was talking about and then when I told him that the sensor goes inside the shoe, he took out the liner of the shoe and said "Oh here is the sensor" I said "Nooooo...the Senor you buy at Apple stores, I get the shoe here." Guys... you gotta catch up!! And please hold the pink!;)
I'm a 56 year old who definitley enjoys modern technology. I have my cell phone, palm pilot, and my newly aquired MP3 player. Technology is great, but I agree with one post regarding thinking of the future. All "girls" need to thinking (no matter how old)about money for later years, and that needs to be a priority. Clothes, shoes, and jewelry are nice but they won't pay the bills. Please save, save, save. I wish I had! Another thing that disappoints me as I read some of these, is the inability to spell and use proper english. Are they teaching so much tech in school that these basics are out the window? Frankly, many of you sort of sound like airheads. I don't want to be critical but I've seen so many young women not reach their full potential because of misplaced priorities.
My next goal is a big screen TV for me and my daughter. I'm the tech genius in my family and church. People come to me to figure out their cell phones and computers. I'm teaching my Mom now how to make her own CD's for herself. I'm now working on upgrading my cell and my daughter who is only 21 months old loves playing on my computer.
Hey I know love my tech stuff. I love the fact they come in array of colors and I can match them to my outfits. Companies have to understand that women spend more than men shooping and so they should make Technology simple to understand.
I shelled over $300.00 for my IPod - I won't spend over $20.00 for shoes!!! I'd rather dress my IPod and Razor with the latest accessories than buying trying to keep up with the Abercrombie generation!!
I am 52 and though pink everything is nauseating to me, that is what some people like so who am I to knock it. I am more of a gadget freak than a fashion boon so I am glad to see the tech world providing "girly stuff" even though I choose the more subtle colors for myself. I do agree that for those less knowledgeable about tech talk things should be explained in layman's terms. It might get more people into them meaning more sales!
I agree. I do like technology quite a bit for a girl, but I also love jewelry. I think that you are right about the personalization of items, because everyone likes to make their posessions their own. Thumbs up and thanks for this article!
Why is it that the only technology everyone is talking about is ipods and cellphones? If those and plasma tvs are the only thing compared in the survey, than it's severely lacking in technology. What about picking your own computer? or a blackberry? or shopping around for other media players besides the one with the catchy commercial? TVs, Cellphones and Ipods are common place. Of course nearly everyone has one and wants the best kind out there. I'd be far more interested if they found girls with far more variety in their tech tastes.
umm.. im a guy
Of course, you realize that 1/3 of those pink phones were not purchased by women ;)
yes, for me, this is true. and for most women, this is true. but of course, things have chnaged in the few years people have released all these tech items. just think, if no one released all this stuff, you would LOVE daimonds, and shoes and all that other stuff that you would rather have an ipod replace all that. well, im a tomboy, and i dont like fashon very much, but i dont hate it. and i'd prefer an ipod over a silk dress. by: 12 year old -name- -lastname-

I believe there is validity to the survey. I am a systems programmer and live and die by technology. I certainly would choose a plasma tv over a diamond necklace and have done so. Marketers: PLEASE do not insult my intelligence by believing that because I am female I prefer pink. In fact, I PREFER SILVER or BLACK!!!
