True or False? You visit electronic stores more often than shopping malls.
If you think this statement is somewhat true, you're not alone. USA Today investigates the results of an Oxygen Network survey that indicates more women would choose electronics, such as iPods, TVs, or cell phones, over silly things like diamond necklaces or designer shoes. Not only do girls want their high-tech toys, but they want the top-of-the-line models.
The survey aimed to compared tech attitudes between men and women, so they interviewed over 1,400 women and 700 men, ages 15-49. Findings suggest that advertisers need to address a broader audience, and not talk down to women.
By talking down to women, I suppose they mean that literally as well as to say, "don't make a pink version of every gadget out there to get my attention." There's a lot of mixed feelings among women in regards to pink gadgets. While young women love their pink handsets, mature women prefer theirs in a more subdued shade, yet a recent survey indicates that a large number of women want to have some sort of color choice. Personalization is huge, not only because it's fun, but also because they want to differentiate their items.
I personally don't think manufacturers introduce pink gadgets to antagonize women, I think they understand there's a massive market for pink gadgets, and being the business brains that they are, they will cater to that segment of the population. The pink RAZR alone alone sold over 600,000 units last Christmas.
It was also clear that women want to learn about the benefits of technology with less focus on specifications, and the majority clearly understands that they don't give themselves enough credit when it comes to their tech savviness.
While specifications are good to know, not everyone understands their meaning in real world terms. How do you explain megapixels, gigabytes or bandwidth to your grandma or someone who didn't grow up with technology? Technology is complicated, so companies should make every effort to translate these terms for non-techies. I'd love to see more tech-translations on websites and in stores. Apple is one of the few companies that tells its customers that a 4GB iPod will fit over 1,000 songs. Now that works for me, and the rest of the world who has to explain how many songs fit in 4GB iPods.
One thing is for sure, women do influence buying decisions in the house. So if women are spending more than $65 billion dollars on electronics each year, they surely must have a good understanding of technology.

I guess I am the lone lioness here, but I love clothes! And shoes, and bags... Yes, I do work in IT and I have tech gadgets just like everyone else on this board. But I don't run out and spend a fortune to keep up with "The Jones" nor do I spend a fortune on clothes either. I don't have the latest cell phone, but I do have one. I also have an iPod but I only have 4 gigs which is enough for me.
This is absolutely true...I requested an awesome laptop from my hubby instead of diamond ring, which is lame for me, I would rather get soemthing I can enjoy myelf. So this is what happening, girls want to get stuff they can truly enjoy and make a statement at the same time and they go for all the cool stuff now, ipods, cell phones, LCD Tvs, Laptops and yes i must add that I shop for latest trends in clothing cuz i defnitely don't want to carry a nano wearing classic fit jeans..hahhaha!!!
Women are becoming the buyers of tech toys! In my case my husband is a Tech lover and I get all the latest info from him. I enjoy it! I love my Pink Razr, I can 't live with out my IPod. The big screen tv, surround sound and GPS were not my favorite puchases but now, I can't see our lives with out them. I show my girlfriends what I have and they get excited as I do! Our next purchase is the new Mac laptop that I WANT!
Ironically, many of the women are asking for marketters to stop stereotyping, yet they are buying gadgets, (ipods, cell phones) with all the bells and whistles just as the marketters want. Still being controlled in my view.
I absolutely agree. I personaly love my IPOD. I definately do not like pink razors. I also want all the latest tech products. Diamonds are nice but theyre not sn ipod or a cybershot digital camera.

I'm a technology girl and I am one of the girls who visit the electronic departments/stores more than the clothes, etc. I'd chose the latest video game over the latest pair of pants any day. I honestly think we should have more color choices for girls other than pink. I hate the comercials showing all these girls going wild over pink cell phones and ipods... my best friend has a BLACK razer phone and she's a girl. She even said that the person in the store, when she asked for a razer phone, brought out the pink phone first then the other colors. I hate stereotyping...

After many women have "broken through the glass ceiling", it only makes sense that they will become a valuable percentage of consumers for new technology. We have more women in law, medicine, politics, business, and other corporate fields than ever before. And in such business, it is usually necessary to be technologically handy. Also, lets admit it, we women love to shop more than most men do. And we are better shoppers. The new outburst of female-owned businesses is like every sellers dream come true. Because, now, women a) make their own money (we can buy our own rings and shoes, b) have a need for new technologically advanced products. (Even housewives are huge in the market!... from robot vacuums to better laundry machines) Women also have become much more indulgent since this recent "I am woman, hear me roar" outburst. (Dont get me wrong... I love that outburst!) Women want to please themselves more now, and with the means to do so, more women are indulging in things considered unnecessary including ipods and $400 phones.

I agree that us ladies enjoy our gadgets. I'm a very techie individual and I love the girlie colors and wish more things came in pink and purple, as well as other bright colors. However, when I see wet, barely dressed women dancing to sell tires..I wonder what the world is coming to!! The techie geek that talks about how high speed internet is the bomb, keep it comin!

I want you to know that there are two grandma's in my family who know what megabytes are. Myself, 79 and my sister Anna 87 both love the computer and wish we had IPod's. Maybe we would just have religious songs, jazz and the oldies but we would love it. Pink is not for us but black and white is great. Just thought I would let you know what the greater generation thinks.
Absolutely! Women as a whole are much more savy then men and the business industry give us credit for being! I may not have a Master's in computer science,..but that does not mean I don't understand the differencs between memory and hard drive capacities and needs,..nor does it mean I don't like a variety in my "toys", just as men do,..who says we women only like the color pink by the way??? I use a Cingular PC 8125 with a bluetooth by the way,....and I'm blonde!!!! LOL! Now how about them apples???
Darling I'd much rather have a good book and a fabulous pair of stunning high quality leather boots, a new cashmere wrap plus custom blended perfume than a silly electronic gadget. They (electronics) are in my opinion silly items that become outdated when the next new object arrives. Who can be bothered when you are concerned with looking and feeling fabulous? Ahhh! It's nice to finally see that I'm not the only one who'd rather browse through the "Father's day" gift catalog, than the jewelry/lingerie "Mother's day" one! I will always feel it's money that is better spent-so what if it's for me?!
First of all, I do like buying new clothes, but just a little and I don't like spending a lot of time "brousing". I do like looking at jewelery, etc. That can even entertain me for about 5 min. I'm a 44 year old woman, don't call me girl. What I love is investigating...how things work, how they are made, etc. So I do spend more time in the electronic department, Radio Shack, etc. than in a clothing store or makeup/jewelry dept. I like having a choice of color, not just pink. ENOUGH PINK ALREADY! But, the most important aspects of an item are its function and reliability. I don't think it is beyond the capabilities of a woman to respect and value more than just an items appearance.
That's survey can be applied to me too. Lately I have been thinking about getting the latest notebook computer and nothing else. Not boys, not clothes, not make up but a notebook computer. I think notebook will complete my life.

Hi, I didn't appreciate calling diamond shoes and designer shoes "silly little things". I don't know one man that doesn't value a 3" stiletto. I love fashion AND technology. Why is loving technology deemed masculine? Certainly a "girl" who likes these silly little things could not be taken seriously enough to operate a gadget. The only difference is when I purchase a product, I also accessorize!!! Now tell me who has more fun the girls or the boys? I prefer a classic color but am all for my sisters being recognized and having choices.
