Gadgets Are A Girl's Best Friend

True or False? You visit electronic stores more often than shopping malls.

If you think this statement is somewhat true, you're not alone. USA Today investigates the results of an Oxygen Network survey that indicates more women would choose electronics, such as iPods, TVs, or cell phones, over silly things like diamond necklaces or designer shoes. Not only do girls want their high-tech toys, but they want the top-of-the-line models.

The survey aimed to compared tech attitudes between men and women, so they interviewed over 1,400 women and 700 men, ages 15-49. Findings suggest that advertisers need to address a broader audience, and not talk down to women.

By talking down to women, I suppose they mean that literally as well as to say, "don't make a pink version of every gadget out there to get my attention." There's a lot of mixed feelings among women in regards to pink gadgets. While young women love their pink handsets, mature women prefer theirs in a more subdued shade, yet a recent survey indicates that a large number of women want to have some sort of color choice. Personalization is huge, not only because it's fun, but also because they want to differentiate their items.

I personally don't think manufacturers introduce pink gadgets to antagonize women, I think they understand there's a massive market for pink gadgets, and being the business brains that they are, they will cater to that segment of the population. The pink RAZR alone alone sold over 600,000 units last Christmas.

It was also clear that women want to learn about the benefits of technology with less focus on specifications, and the majority clearly understands that they don't give themselves enough credit when it comes to their tech savviness.

While specifications are good to know, not everyone understands their meaning in real world terms. How do you explain megapixels, gigabytes or bandwidth to your grandma or someone who didn't grow up with technology?  Technology is complicated, so companies should make every effort to translate these terms for non-techies. I'd love to see more tech-translations on websites and in stores. Apple is one of the few companies that tells its customers that a 4GB iPod will fit over 1,000 songs. Now that works for me, and the rest of the world who has to explain how many songs fit in 4GB iPods.

One thing is for sure, women do influence buying decisions in the house. So if women are spending more than $65 billion dollars on electronics each year, they surely must have a good understanding of technology.

Women, do you agree with this survey? Tell me what you think.

I work in IT, so I might be biased, but I think that women are savvy and absolutely able to understand features and even request customized features that go beyond color. I use my cell phone for pictures, chatting, web browsing, calculating, and a morning alarm clock. I especially think business women will tap into a market of feature-rich tech products!

I agree! I spend much more time going to electronics stores than to malls,I love my "Toys"!! Don't get me wrong, I love clothes,, but I love my toys way more! I mean how much fun can you have with a new skirt, you wearit, people tell you you look nice and that's it!?I'd much rather get new software for my laptop, or a new camera, cell phone. Even if it's the latest technology I can find out about it and how to use it by simply going online, so even if I don't understand something about the latest gadget, it's easy to learn, and very good for the soul!

Speaking from a 21 year old female's perspective, I love to go shopping for clothes and shoes, but I also love to have the same high expectations for everything that I would want electronically. That could be an I-POD or a new cell phone. Electronic gadgets should have the same amount of options/choices as do all of the nice clothing and shoe options for women out there, because quality is quality.

I think another reason for a larger than expected number of women buying tech is as gifts-that is for others, whether it is the men or children in their lives.

I believe these serveys are biased. Especially if the participants are aware of those posting the servey, (Oxygen). Even in the 1st paragraph the author called the jewelry "silly". Such comments influence the outcome of a servey. If the technology was called "silly" perhaps more women would have voted otherwise.

I'm a mature 40 year old, and I like the gadgets I aquire. Usually, my wonderful, outstanding and overall studly husband buys something (he's standing behind me, and he's all mine ladies so step back!), and if its like a cell phone, I usually get one just like his (but in a different color of course). I'd like to get the pink RAZR phone, but I settled for the silver. But colors are not everything of course. It has to work and work well for me!

I dont fit in your age group. I'm 62 and I love my pc.My cell has all the up to date toys:) I would settle for only the best ( in my opinion) Ipod. It's not just you youngster, us old ladies are enjoying the world of gadgets too.

I love my high-tech gear. It has nothing to do with, "Hey, look what I got." I chose my Palm Treo 650 because I am a working mother of 2, and it enables me to multitask & streamline my life. My iPod enables me to have unlimited workout songs for the gym. My laptop doubles as a portable DVD player for the kids. It is all about simplifying your life. Would I rather have more time in my day than a diamond necklace? You betcha.

How about you ladies put your money in a mutual fund instead and save for retirement? Cuz you're gonna need every freaking penny when social security and medicare go bye bye. I hate to see young people sucked into the vortex of materialistic self-absorption that society has become to only render our youth in debt or broke.

After reading the previous comments, I can say one thing for sure: gadgets and fashion are certainly more important than spelling and grammar!

Hmmmm..It seems to me that the Ipod and Razr are merely fashion accessories. They have become the "silly jewelry".

I work in IT and have called myself Gadget Girl more than once because I absolutely love the new technology coming out and would rather shop for it than clothes. Women are more savvy about technology but the women who aren't savvy and want to become savvy are finding outlets in their girl friends who are. Much easier to ask another women than a man. And sometimes the men are a little clueless on technology. As we continue to educate women, the number of technology savvy women will grow. I also agree that other colors should be used besides pink. I like different colored items but am definitely not drawn to anything pink. I'm not a child, I'm an adult women who enjoys a tremendous amount of functionality but with a little bit of flair thrown in. I don't need to broadcast to the world 'hey, look at my bright pink cell phone'.

For a lot of girls, I think clothing is bought to be a short term thing. If you buy something like an Ipod, you can use it on a daily basis for a few years. Electronics provide us something that clothes, for most, do not - entertainment. Even while you work, you can hook it up and listen to songs, which I would find far more entertaining that staring at a scarf. As far as cell phones go, they keep us in touch with others. It's an instant ticket to talk to anyone. The point in getting things top-of-the-line is that technology is so quickly evolving, if you buy something older, by the time your 2yr contract is up, it's going to look like something out of an old TV show. Let's face it, we all - male or female - like to play with little shiny gadgets with lots of fun lights and buttons... even babies like to pla with the stuff. Jewelry is always nice, but again, the entertainment value is almost nill. We're just a generation that doesn't know how to be bored... and we'd rather have things that quench that thirst. From one girl to another :) Good article

Who Cares? Is this really that important to advertise? Is this going to save and lives or improve life for anyone? You people at Yahoo are sad...

I tell hubbie what I want and he does the research and helps me decide which is best. (like a computer or cell phone or digital camera.) He is a tech-gawd so I trust his judgement. I can do the reasearch. I know how, I just like to have someone who reads about it all day long to help with the imput. We make technological decisions together (how much to spend vs. the level of technology we receive.) Generally we agree on a budget and then an item and make the deicision together based on his/ our research. Try to make it a team thing so we can get the most bang for our buck. A little research can prove to be very lucrative when spending lots of money on an item. :) ps. I always want the lastest and greatest. He does too. And we usually just get what we want.

It is amazing that none of you can spell to safe your life. Maybe you spend too much time talking on your cell phones and listening to your IPods than paying attention in school.
