Silicon Valley wired commuters will be happy to turn their morning commute into a productive one, as Caltrain introduces continuous high-speed Internet access along 16 miles of rail line. From Milbrae to Palo Alto, passengers will be able to enjoy Wi-Fi access even at speeds of 70 mph, without interruption.
Caltrain extends from San Francisco all the way to San Jose, so 16 miles of coverage may not seem like a long distance, but it should give you enough time to check email, read news, watch streaming video or surf the Internet between this area. But don't' despair, Caltrain is working on providing Wi-Fi along the entire rail mainline within the next few months.
This is great news for everyone living along the Bay Area. Traffic is a nightmare along the 101, so this "Surf and Ride" option will surely attract a lot of new people, at least I hope so.
I'm going to have to go test this myself this weekend, and will come back with a first hand report. In the meantime, why don't you Caltrain commuters fill me in on this new Wi-Fi spot.
What do you think, is introducing Wi-Fi in mass transit a good way to get you to ride the train to work?

Not for me,no.But I do love Wi-Fi.I have wireless internet and play online on my psp.Im guessing people who usually dribe to the same spot as A train goes will now ride the train.
Oh, I live in Seattle, and we have had it on our buses for a long time now. Some buses have a red "WIFI" sticker and you can connect on the buses, but for some reason, on cloudy days, it is a little slower. More people using it? I don`t know, but the connection is a bit slow, but better than nothing. It is just a standard 11mbps connection which I find good enough for a messenger or emails. I really like the system!

It appears we are seeing just the tip of the Wi-FI iceberg. You must give Caltrain credit, this just might help pull in some of the almost customers who need a little encouragement. Can BART be far behind?
