This back-to-school season is clearly becoming one of the most paranoia-filled seasons yet—and companies are cashing in. Chris Null wrote about MJ Safety Solution, a U.S. based company that sells bulletproof backpacks to offer students some level of protection in case they're ever caught in the middle of a school shooting. The website brings to mind the fact that 328 school shooting have occured since 1999, leaving 229 dead and 422 injured. And with the recent shooting in Virginia Tech still fresh in our minds, the idea of spending $175 on a backpack to protect junior in school seems plausible.
Over in Britain parents have similar concerns, except they're more worried about their children being stabbed on their way to school. Bladerunner is known for creating kevlar lined armoured vests for British troops in Iraq, but recently they've gotten requests for uniforms from parents who want the extra peace of mind. Therefore, the company has begun production on a small number of stab-proof uniforms lined with kevlar, which is five times stronger than steel. According to an AP report, each uniform will cost parents an estimated $260, and will only be created upon request.
I wonder how many parents will consider home schooling next year?

In some US cities, wearing body armor is a crime - this is not generally prosecuted unless you commit a gun-crime while wearing armor, but having such laws on the books is going to discourage sales of products like this. Of course the folks who really need such clothing generally live in poorer neighborhoods and can't afford it. In Israel, people have been able to buy attractive bullet-proof clothing for a long time - some of those products will be knife resistant also. bob_thq - if your child is struggling to save their life, this kind of protection may be just what they need to survive. Intentional assassination is not the only reason people get stabbed.
If you buy your kid a bullet-proof vest and/or a stab-proof uniform, whats next? A strangle-proof necklace? A steel head-band? I doubt parents will have "peace of mind" after buying one protective item of clothing when other ways someone could kill their child on their way to school or in the building pop up in their head. BTW, bullets move pretty fast. I doubt someone is going to be able to get their backpack off their shoulders and block a bullet going towards any other part of their body before the bullet hits them. Also, there are billions of schools in the U.S.A. The chance of your childs school being attacked or your child being murdered on their way to school is a chance, but a very slim one.
This just scares me. The reality is that there are many shotting and that parants should be more protective of their kids. I hope nothing like the VT massacre ever happens again. Also I think that if parants are buying their kids things like bullet-proof back pancks and stab-proof clothes, you will scare them too.
I DON'T LIKE THIS IDEA AT ALL. I FEEL WE IT JUST SCARES KIDS MORE THAN ANYTHING. THINK BACK TO WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD HOW WOULD YOU AND WHAT YOU THINK? REMEMBER OUR CHILDREN ARE THE NEXT GENERATION TO BE IN OUR ADULT SHOES. DO YOU WANT TO FEAR THEM FROM GOING OUTSIDE AND FEAR GOING TO WORK AND PLAY BECAUSE THEY FORGOT THERE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING OR SOME OTHER STUPID DEVICE THAT PEOPLE JUST WANT TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF. I FEEL SOCIETY HAS GONE TO FAR AND NEEDS TO GROW UP. WE DIDN'T HAVE THESE DEVICES BACK IN 1920'S THROUGH 1990'S AND CRIME WAS EVERYWHERE AND STILL HERE WE ARE SO JUST GROW UP AND STOP LETTING POLITIANS AND THE GOVERNMENT RULE YOUR LIFE.

Yeah, they all think that the murderer is stupid enough not to try to stab a 2nd time on the neck or the head...It's sad be it's real :(
