Whenever rumor and speculation about an upcoming Apple product intensifies, Photoshop Jockeys churn out some pretty interesting mockups, which eventually make their way to technology blogs. This happens all the time, and bloggers usually use the best ones to illustrate the rumored specifications.
Today, Gizmodo published a "spy shot" of what appears to be a Photoshop file showing five widescreen iPod nanos forming a circle. While most of us take mockups or spy shots with a grain of salt, some don't, and in this case, Apple itself sicked their legal team on Gizmodo and other blogs who published photos of the mysterious iPod nano. Apple lawyers called contents of the spy shot intellectual property, therefore adding some validity to the rumor since this usually never happens. Now many of us are wondering if the third generation iPod nano will in fact be square.
Looking at the image in question, it's hard to believe Apple would ever create such an iPod. But rumor has it, the next iPod nano will play videos, hence the widescreen. There's also talk about Apple introducing new colors, and the image clearly shows three colors we haven't seen before: light green, light blue and cranberry. Honestly, I think adding video to the iPod nano at this point is pointless. The screen will be too small even if they widen it. Most of us are waiting for touchscreen functionality on future iPods, and I personally will not be buying a new one until this happens.
What about you? What iPod features are you waiting for?
