How do you get more women to enroll into your school's computer science programs? You hold a "nerd auction," of course. Anyway, that's what members of the Linux Users Group, the largest computer club in Washington State University, are doing. To improve their image, the group has agreed to undergo a makeover and auction its members off to women who need help fixing their computer or do their stats homework.
Ben Ford, president of the Linux Users Group, says on a blog post they're hoping to enlist the help of sorority girls. "The problem is that we're all still nerds. Let's face it, guys. If anyone's going to bid on us, we'll need some spicing up." If any sorority takes on the challenge, these guys will be at their mercy, and everything will be documented and aired on YouTube. Let's hope these girls are not as cruel as the ladies over at Jezebel who gave a Gizmodo intern a makeover he'll never forget. Poor Benny.
The project is getting some national attention thanks to the Associated Press, so they can't back out now. Honestly, I don't think this will get women into computer science programs (especially when you assume they don't know how to fix their own computers, need help with stats homework, and "like nothing better than a makeover"), but it's obviously good for publicity and should be pretty entertaining to watch. Just goes to show how bad we need more women in these departments.

Gina, You can fix my computer, and give me a makeover. ;) Seriously though, It might help balance some of the media bias, that paints people in Technical professions as Archetypical nerds. Most of us are just normal guys. I work and satellite, and have worked with 2 "Rocket Scientists" literally. Orbital Mechanics guys. One was a very handsome brother who DJ's on weekends. The other - Well he was a nerd. :) LOL but at least we're batting 500. Still though the workforce is hugely unbalanced and that must mean opportunities for women that are going untapped. Blessings, BB.
