Levi's + iPod Jeans= iJeans?

Levi Strauss announced their partnership with Apple at the beginning of the year, and I've been anxiously awaiting the end result of the so-called Levi's Redwire DLX Jeans. And the wait is over.

Gizmodo found some pictures of the carpenter-style jeans over at a Dutch site that shows more images of this iJean hideousness that's about to appear stateside.

I was under the impression that some people prefer their Levi's skintight (did this trend die back in the 80s?), so I don't know why Levi's decided to integrate a built-in docking cradle, a joystick, and retractable headphones into these jeans.

As you can see from the image, the small pocket has a clickwheel to control the iPod. A long red ribbon attached to the inside of a pocket, seems to work as a bungi chord to prevent accidental iPod drops to the floor, and that retractable earphone piece is way too bulky to work for me.

Overall, the idea was poorly executed. Way too confusing, and way too many pockets. I believe we'll hear a lot of complaining from kids who forgot to take the iPod out of their jeans before washing them.

"Moooommmmmm, you washed my iPod!"

One more thing....the jeans will cost you about $200. Not a good deal, especially when you run the risk of ruining a perfect iPod player in the wash, not to mention you'll also look way too iPodified.

What do you think? Would you ever be caught dead in these?

Quick update from Bright.nl:

Levi's doesn't think these jeans will encourage theft but rather protect your iPod from scratches, the joystick on the small pocket is upside down in use ('you will get used to that'), and you can wash the jeans just fine as long as you remove the iPod parts (and your iPod itself of course). A spokesperson of Levi's says this will be easy.

My goodness...what's with everyone flaming these jeans? I think that is a pretty freakin' neat idea, and I would buy those if they were cheaper(...okay, a LOT cheaper. I'm poor LOL. XD). People are still gonna buy them and they probably will be one of "the next big thing"s. It also shows how technology and life and integrating so much today. You can't have one without the other. Overall, it's a very cool idea.

This could be the worst idea Apple has ever had. And no matter how much it will cost, no matter how many critics write excelent critiques about it just like you did here, there will be thousands of little teenagers that don't know left from right harassing their parents for these jeans this Christmas. And if Levi decides to put a few rips in the jeans, they'll be even more popular and even more expensive. It's just a way to sell more jeans that will fade or break(electronics) easily and iPods that are going to be accidentally thrown in the wash. Apple/Levi need to come to their senses and go back to making their own products, which are still far from perfected.

It's hideous! I-pod's are valued for being able to take anywhere, and what if you don't want both. It just seemed like a stupid idea overall. And I totally love my tight jeans! :)

this is a no go, those who use an Ipod just want to play along with others and look rich. I have a great color-full sandisk Sansa mp3 player and it includes a great strap that attaches to my studded belt like a charm, there is no need to see a screen or go overboard when you know and love your jam well....its not about what you have or the value, its how you can sing it and attract birds...

yeah but you'd have to be stupid enough to wash your iPod in your jeans!!! and mostly adults would be buying the jeans not kids so hopefully they're not that dumb!!!

sadly, somone will buy these. but ipods cost $300 alone. you know you've reached the 21st century when you make jeans to match the ipod, instead of vice versa. i smell a bust.

How much more can we take from Apple? As if it wasnt enough to have the nano and every other accessory in the world dedicated to this device. Now jeans? To be honest i wouldnt have my kids or myself get caught wearing these jeans. Very tacky and too overly priced, as the article says teens probably would wash their ipod if they got the chance at wearing them.

I just don't see the point of these. What can the magic pants do that you can't normally do by sticking your ipod in your pocket?

  • 59 Posted by butzman1 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 3:15PM EDT Report Abuse

Man, When will people realize that the iPOD and everything associated with it is just the new fad? There are so many MP3 players with better quality and price, but everyone wants an iPOD. This just proves my point even more. $200 for a pair of jeans that dock and iPOD? C'mon! You gotta be kiddin me!

thats just stupid, thats all i gotta say, straight up stupid

  • 61 Posted by northmesan on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:41PM EDT Report Abuse

You mean I gotta wear the ugly pants EVERYDAY if I'm gonna listen to my iPod? Stupid. I already have a case for it. The great thing about an iPod is that it's compact. I don't need a stupid accessory to bulk out my gear.

Sounds lame to me; I still like my jeans tight baby (if you've got it, flaunt it)! ;o)

wow, that's the most stupidest idea EVER!! i mean, who in the right mind would buy these things? they look stupid! and they're useless, what can a pair of jeans do? with iPods? come on, people! get a life! we all know that we're really happy with our iPods and the way they work. with something like THAT, it's a complete waste of Apple and Levi's time. they're useless, destroy a good iPod and a pair of jeans (not that they look good or anything, they do look like boy pants), and makes people look like a NERD!! NERD!! N-E-R-D!! Got it memorized? wow, they have got to be joking about selling these. i'm going to laugh my head off if i see anyone wearing these. really!! they're going off, wasting their money on making these! wow, and do i mean WOW!! what a WASTE of their time! XD
