Levi Strauss announced their partnership with Apple at the beginning of the year, and I've been anxiously awaiting the end result of the so-called Levi's Redwire DLX Jeans. And the wait is over.
Gizmodo found some pictures of the carpenter-style jeans over at a Dutch site that shows more images of this iJean hideousness that's about to appear stateside.
I was under the impression that some people prefer their Levi's skintight (did this trend die back in the 80s?), so I don't know why Levi's decided to integrate a built-in docking cradle, a joystick, and retractable headphones into these jeans.
As you can see from the image, the small pocket has a clickwheel to control the iPod. A long red ribbon attached to the inside of a pocket, seems to work as a bungi chord to prevent accidental iPod drops to the floor, and that retractable earphone piece is way too bulky to work for me.
Overall, the idea was poorly executed. Way too confusing, and way too many pockets. I believe we'll hear a lot of complaining from kids who forgot to take the iPod out of their jeans before washing them.
"Moooommmmmm, you washed my iPod!"
One more thing....the jeans will cost you about $200. Not a good deal, especially when you run the risk of ruining a perfect iPod player in the wash, not to mention you'll also look way too iPodified.
What do you think? Would you ever be caught dead in these?
Quick update from Bright.nl:
Levi's doesn't think these jeans will encourage theft but rather protect your iPod from scratches, the joystick on the small pocket is upside down in use ('you will get used to that'), and you can wash the jeans just fine as long as you remove the iPod parts (and your iPod itself of course). A spokesperson of Levi's says this will be easy.

dear author, you used the wrong form of the word 'to/too/two' in the last paragraph. you should have used 'too' instead of 'to'. Thanks
that is very cool
*I meant second to last paragraph*
i agree with kayaclaude
Cant someone just infuse an Ipod directly into my brain? Wait, I hit my head a lot, maybe what people really need to worry about is Israel, Bush, and many many other local and worldy issues. WAKE UP AND WRITE ABOUT SOMTHING MEANINGFUL!
at the moment it seems the majority of the comments are against the jeans i agree, but the fact of the matter is that as soon as the jeans make an apperance on mtv or paris hilton decides to put on a pair on it will become "hot" and opinions will change.
I loooove them. FABulous!
why would anyone wear these when they can put thier ipod in CUTE jeans, and listen to it at the same time, while saving $200. yuh.
Never
ipods are over priced to begin with, and a pair of $200 dollar jeans better be able to fly me to the moon and back besides just being able to hook up an ipod to them. But we all know that there will be people who will buy them for their whinny spoiled teenage kids who have to have everything and anything that's "like totaly popular!". Next it'll be a swimsuit that can hook up to an ipod and protect it from water while you're swimming and listening to music and sell it for $200 too. I just can't wait for this whole ipod phase to die out.
I don't think they are too bad an idea. How many teens wash their jeans and how regularly at that. Also, as for accidents, yes some will happen but not as many as one accidently washes some dollar bills. Kids are far too careful of their tech devices than anything else. As for the price of the jeans, I think a good pair costs about $60, so an "iPODified" jeans would reasonably cost $200. I think like all inventions there will be resistance at first but this one might be a step to something greater. Maybe people should not resist change so much. I guess one gets that way when they are old. I don't think we need to diss this one out as yet. I definitely would like one of these.
those are obviously men's jeans
and by the way christiankelly if you're so worried about that stuff then why did you read this in the first place
um... who would wear those jeans, i know now every company wants to be with the times, and go all electronic. but this goes tooo far
That so so dumb that is the worst ting in the world. Really make a ijean. Like if you wore them out or they ripped or if you outgrew them. This is dumb. Make something else, like something people would like.
ipod paired with jeans?..innovative idea...these days "partnership" seems to be the fad..jeans+ipod..restaurant+detergent powder..etc., technology changes fast, today it's the ipod and tomorrow it's another thing..gotta think over what jeans and ipod are really for...
dude like jus wear regular jeans and stick ur ipod in them. whooo. that really sux i was waiting for these to come out and now they have and they look like crap -.- i was expecting sumtin alot more useful
They are bulky and look wierd and expensive but they are still a cool idea for someone who likes to travel with their iPod everywhere... If Levy tries to re-design them and maybe drop the prices about $170 I could see myself buying a pair... and its really not fair to call people dorks.
i would never wear these! i might as well just put my ipod in my pocket. then i can not have all of the bulky compartments. i would neither buy nor wear these jeans
