How Much Is Your Bag Worth?

The gals over at Gadget Candy ask "What's in your handbag?" The question is prompted by a survey Jabra conducted among 20-30 years old women, which concluded that today's women carry twice as many items compared with their mother's generation. They think this may be due to the amount of techie items found inside a woman's purse.

Not surprisingly, women carry more than two gadgets in their purse at all times, ranging from iPods to digital cameras, not to mention they also sport designer handbags, shoes and clothes.  

If you were to ask me to empty the contents of my purse at any given moment, you'll find at least four gadgets I never leave home without: a Treo, an iPod, a digital camera and Bluetooth headset. That's over $1,000 worth of gear getting banged up in my purse—I almost feel sick just thinking about that.

According to a British study, the average Brit walks around with £800 in clothes and gadgets. Women and mature professionals have the highest street value, easily carrying gear worth more than £991. What's surprising, is that even students and the unemployed still manage to carry at least £690 worth of gear.

Although the survey was conducted in Britain, it's not far from the truth in America where most people carry around hundreds of dollars worth in gear, and you better believe thieves have taken notice.

My best advice is to only carry gadgets that you really need (i.e. do I really need an iPod and digital camera with me all the times?), and find out if gadgets can be covered under your current insurance plan.
