Christmas has truly gone geek this year. Retailers are selling holiday decorations with a tech spin, and some techies are cheerfully decorating their Christmas tree with gizmos. Even gamers joined the fun by topping the tree with Halo helmets. Our friends over at DVICE have a list of 18 Christmas tress you won't see at grandma's, all geeky in their own way. But if you're not ready to deck the halls with computer parts, USB devices, and old CDs, then check out the list below where I've rounded some of the geekiest holiday decorations.
Motherboard Christmas Tree: Urban Outfitters is truly embracing its nerdy side with this $10 desktop tree made from PC motherboards and flashing LED lights. A battery powers it and serves as a tree trunk to finish the look. Perfect for the office!
Circuitboard Ornament Set: Trying to be more eco-friendly this season? Acorn Studios spends most its weekends digging through landfills in search of electronic waste they turn into beautiful and geek-chic decorations. This year, they're selling three brilliant circuit board tree ornaments in the shape of a star, a bell, and a tree. Make your own if you dare, or order your own set and show everyone your eco-geek side.
Santa's Slideshow Ornament: Digital photo frames are everywhere and now you can hang them on your Christmas tree. This red tree ornament holds up to 50 photos, and plays a slide show on its tiny 1.5-inch color LCD. It's battery operated, so you don't have to worry about running extra wires to power it up.
USB Christmas Tree: I'm not a fan of decorating my workspace with garland and lights during the holidays, but I think I can give the USB Christmas tree a try. The tiny desktop tree plugs in to your computer, adding some much-needed Christmas spirit to your cubicle. The six-inch-tall tree cycles through different colors.
Season's Readings: This is another battery-powered ornament that'll give your tree a much-needed high-tech touch without throwing off your holiday theme. The ornament gets your message across displaying festive greetings like "Home for Xmas," "Joy to the World," and "Feliz Navidad." Too bad you can't program your own message. You can get them in different colors for about $15.
Happy holidays! If you have any other fun suggestions, let me know in the comments section.
