Last night, I spotted Jook along with a lot of great new technology, some of it still in the concept stage, over at the Digital Experience event hosted at the Caesar's Palace Hotel. More on that later, but let first me tell you about Jook and what it plans to do for social music sharing.
Jook is a new technology that enables any iPod or music player to act like a personal radio station, allowing you to share your music with other Jook users within 10 yards. Users attach Jook to their music player, which includes a pair of earbuds with a signal button that lets others know when your Jook is in sharing mode. You don't always have to share your tunes, but if your Jook is flashing a red light, that lets others know they can tune in to your personal broadcast.
The best part is Jook comes with software that gathers information about the music you shared while you were out, and if those users have a profile, you're also able to connect with them over a social network. This is an excellent way to promote your tunes if you're a DJ or musician. Jook is not available just yet, but reps tell me they'll be giving away 10,000 Jooks to the city with the most participants, so users can start sharing their music on the road. Keep on eye on this new technology at http://www.jook.us/, and don't forget to vote for your city. Expect Jook to hit the streets later this year.

This is the same product created by Snooptunes about a year ago. A 16 year old kid put it out on the market. I think they are going to have problems with the music industry once they get wind of them transferring digital music content for free.

My first thought was that Jook wouldn't sell any products after the first few weeks becasue it would just be a fad that fades quickly. Then I thought about how often I've seen people sharing headphones - each one using a single ear-bud. This might just fly, especially as the DRM folks wouldn't like MP3 players that could transfer files (songs) via infrared like the Palm PDAs do.
