Call me paranoid, but when I go on long vacation I unplug all my computer or entertainment equipment just in case. The problem with that is I also end up powering off my DVR, and subsequently end up missing all my favorite shows because the DVR couldn't record them.
I gave you a few tips on how to reduce your energy bill using a couple of gizmos that monitor your electricity usage in real time, but if you prefer to keep it simple you might want to give Belkin's Conserve Surge Protector a try once it hits stores. I spotted this handy surge protector over at Macworld, which includes a wireless remote control that allows you to power off devices without having to reach behind the entertainment center or desk.
This is a good thing, because as you know most electronics will continue to consume power even when they're on a standby mode. Now the strip has a total of eight outlets, but only two will always remain on so you can use them to plug in devices you typically need on all the time such as your home phone or DVR. This nifty surge protector will be available in stores starting this Summer for $49.99.
It's a high price for a surge protector, but remember that this one spares you from those phantom loads.

So how do you control when the other six come on? I don't know about you, but the surge protector for my entertainment system is tangled amidst power cords behind a massive, heavy entertainment center. That thing had better have a remote control or something.
