The one thing everyone dreads about hanging a flat panel display on the wall is running wires to all the components. This task is especially difficult if you decide to mount your HDTV over a fireplace. Belkin had its upcoming Flywire on display at Macworld which streams high-definition content wirelessly from a transmitter that can sit anywhere in the room to a receiver that hides behind the flat panel display.

The Flywire can accommodate up to six video inputs from HD and non-HD devices and transmits an uncompressed 1080p signal within 100 feet. This means you can hook up your TiVo HD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player, cable box, and DVD to the Flywire, and not worry about unsightly wires ever again. A remote control is included to allow you to switch between inputs.

Belkin's Flywire will be available this summer for a price set between $500 and $600, which may be cheaper than hiring someone to run wires through the wall.

what about multi-zone capability . . . can i use this to watch a dvd in my home theater . . . oprah in the kitchen . . . and sesame street in the kid's bedroom . . . all at the same time? anybody know how versatile this hing is going to be?"

NO, each transmitter and receiver will be dedicated to it's own HDTV. There are few ways to make it possible, automation technologies or through Multimedia computers.

$500 to $600 for the connection? That's as much as many HDTVs! I think it's going to have tough going in the market based on that pricing.

this really needs to be more multi-zone compatible and expandable . . . the base station needs to be able to independently communicate with multiple receivers . . . the cost should be no more than $300-$400 dollars for the base and less than $100 for the receivers . . . and the quality should rival that of a wired system . . . otherwise it is still too simple to run wires inside . . . say . . . crown moulding . . . without poking holes in drywall . . . it appears that this is a mere baby step to the ultimate goal of wireless hi-def audio and video for the home . . .
