Several reports today say the latest firmware for the iPod Classic, version 1.1, may be causing serious electrical problems for users. The Street's Gary Krakow says sites like iLounge.com and Stereophile.com have recieved reports from users who claim the firmware may be responsible for sending electrical pulses through the headphone jack and docking station.
It seems those pulses have been measured at 500 millivolts of DC, which could cause damage to any equipment attached to the player, and that includes your expensive headphones. Many iPod classic owners who left messages on Apple's forums have reported hearing a "hiss," "buzzing," and "static" after updating the firmware. But that's not all, a few users also had music files removed after the upgrade, and some iPods simply froze up so Apple had to replace them. If you haven't updated the firmware, you might want to wait a bit longer until Apple resolves the issue. If you've already updated the software, then good luck. Do let us know if you've experienced any problems yourself.

Uh... I ended up downgrading my firmware after updating it. That 'hissing' sound was really starting to irritate me... it took me forever to actually find out how to do it, but I'm so glad I did in the end. But at least now I might know why my headphones just suddenly started to die.
I am hearing the same hissing sound. I had no idea it was the software casuing the hiss. I just purchased my iPod, and I thought I was simply doing something wrong while trying to power the device down. lol I am running iTunes 7.6 on a PC with Windows XP. Other than the small hissing sound, I have no issue.
I've been having alot of issues with itunes lately. At first it kept shutting down my internet explorer,so then when i tried to uninstall it,it left Quicktime on my computer which for some reason WONT uninstall.I just bought this machine like less than 6 months ago,a dell 531 with Vista premium included.I also just got an ipod classic for xmas, now i cant even re-install itunes at all, even if i just go to the site it shuts down my i.e.,and it's messed up because i was spending like 15 dollars a week on music.Wish i knew what to do...
Plus yeah,i hear that after turning my ipod off, too. Its like its still on...
If my Bose headphones are damaged will Apple replace them?
I have the 80GB ipod classic. Yesterday I did notice a new hissing sound when the headphones were plugged in with the ipod turned off. I just ignored it though and it didn't seem to damage anything. I hope it stays that way.
I have the iPod Touch and yesterday it froze up, and it toke a little bit, but something came up and said restore it. (like it does in the manual)
We found out when we were trying to download songs to my daughter's iPod touch that if you have the virus proctection program McAfee it will not allow you to download them. It thinks it is like a digital camera. You need to disable Mcafee to get the songs on.
had ipod 80 gb classic updated it fried the whole thing headphones and all i got it replaced but took 8-10 weeks so after that i was really fed up with apple (ipods) and i went out and bought a sirius portable mp3 player works and controls much better much more user friendly
apple posted a update yesteday that says its for bug fixs so it should solve the problem
i have the new 30 gig and updated it when i got it. about a week later i would be listening to a song, it would only play the for the first 15 seconds or so then skip to a totally different song and eventually freeze. using ms windows xp
I didn't realize it was from the firmware update but i did notice that after i turned off my ipod classic and switched it into hold the headphones do buzz but only when in hold
Update your firmware, 1.1.1 fixed it for me, the update came out like two days ago
I have a 60GB video ipod and it started shocking me (through the headphones) last winter. I tried different headphones, but it still happened. At first, it didn't happen every time so I just ignored it, thinking it was static electricity, but the problem is now worse. The other day I got a major shock to my ears (on my new Bose earphones no less) and the ipod froze. It wouldn't come off hold, turn off, or anything. I let the battery run out, charged it, and it's working again. But I'm still getting shocked! The local apple store offered to sell me a refurbished replacement or give me 10% off a new ipod. To be honest, neither option makes me very happy. (Especially since the extended warranty I paid extra for just ended in December!!) I'm not using my Bose earphones with it now, and I think twice before using it in general. After all, the next shock might render it useless!
ok i have noticed that on some songs my ipods sound cuts out
I Just got a 80gb 6gen classic and immediately ask for the upgrade installed and haven't had any problems so Far, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I have an iPod classic and ran into the static sound problem after installing the 1.1 upgrade. The big announcement out of Macworld was rentals through iTunes and this upgrade was suppose to give this capability to the classic iPods. Based on the possibility of this upgrade destroying my $100 bose ear buds I decided to down grade to 1.0.3. I find it amazing how Apple will poke fun at Microsoft about Vista and Window users down grading to XP, when their big hype this year was rentals but their execution of a poorly designed upgrade has forced a number of their customer to down grade their Ipod firmware and not take advantage of their movie rental service. I find Apple to be very arrogant and unresponsive to their customers.
After the 1.1 update an error message stated the ipod was configured to another computer. I have never synced the Ipod to any other computer. I was given the option of erasing and resyncing. After , no other optionts were available. I chose to resync and erase. Fortunately, I was able to regain all of my files from a backup folder and download it back to the Ipod Classic.
Mine works just fine and all of my friends do too, We all have the new 1.1 firmware however we all have apple computers so its probably only on pc's
