There's been a lot of talk regarding the demise of the HD DVD format this week, and you can read all about the gory details here, here and here. Those who chose to go the HD DVD route are probably feeling cheated, especially if you're one of the many who made a late decision last week. Unfortunately, Toshiba won't be issuing any refunds anytime soon, and those stuck with the losing format are now selling their wares on eBay and Craigslist to unsuspecting late adopters.
So what else are you supposed to do with your now obsolete HD DVD player and DVDs? Engadget has a few suggestions, although I wouldn't seriously recommend any of them, and Wired's How-to-Wiki proposes a daring weekend project only a true nerd could take on.
The overly enthusiastic article offers up step-by-step instructions on how to convert your HD DVDs to Blu-ray. The problem here is you'll need need an HD DVD drive, a Blu-ray burner, and pricey software which totally eliminates your chances of saving money. This project will obviously be more trouble than it's worth, but if you're a geek who likes a good challenge—and owns all the right equipment—then this is a project that will test your true geekiness.
So, what do you plan to do with your HD DVD player and discs?
