In case you haven't noticed, Yahoo! has been featuring some interesting stories from outside publishers on its front page all day today thanks to a new Yahoo! service that's still in beta. Yahoo! Buzz is a new site that allows readers to vote for their favorite stories in order to drive them to the bottom or the top of the list. It's similar to Digg in many ways, but it's also very different in that users are not the ones submitting the stories.
On the contrary, the stories come from "pre-approved publishers" like the Huffington Post, Wordpress, Wired, Boing Boing, Ars Technica, and 100 other online publications you've probably heard about. What's really cool for these publishers is that if one their stories generates a lot of buzz, it has a chance of being featured on Yahoo!'s front page so imagine the traffic they're going to get (hope their servers are ready). Wired says a link to one of its featured stories got over two million page views in two hours!
I personally thought that being taken to a site outside of Yahoo! was strange at first, but I applaud this bold move because now smaller publishers are given tremendous exposure based on their stories, and Yahoo! readers get cutting-edge news based on the public's vote.
As a reader and publisher I'm extremely excited about Yahoo! Buzz and can't wait for it to open to smaller publishers. I'd love to see how this will affect the quality of stories written by publishers on this beta program if at all.
The story selection on Buzz is limited as of this post since the site is still in beta, but I'm sure that will change when Yahoo! opens this social news site to other publishers.
[Full disclosure: Yahoo! Tech and Yahoo! Buzz are both owned by Yahoo!]

I like the fact that the system is similar to Digg, but I do not like the 'approved publisher' part of it. While I can see where some fluff may get filtered out by only allowing certain content in, most of the content that I read on a daily basis comes from individual blogs of people who are experts in a certain area. I do like some articles from places like ars and boingboing, but giving the users the ability to choose what content is king will result in a larger overall audience. Digg has a great system in place, but it suffers from the fact that most of the users are tech minded and most content follows that line. If Buzz can encompass all areas of content and keep the rating system honest, then they have a winner. Visit my blog at http://www.smbtechadvice.com
