Homelessness has always plagued the city of San Francisco, and plenty of programs have been put in place to offer help. Now one of these programs called Project Homeless Connect has partnered with Google's Grand Central to offer homeless folks a free voicemail account.

MSNBC says Google will offer every homeless person living in San Francisco a free lifetime local phone number and voicemail account they can give out to friends, family, clinics, and potential employers.

The account can be accessed from any phone, so users can call anytime to retrieve personal messages. These free accounts will be distributed through shelters and other agencies upon request.

I think this is a great gesture on Google's part, and one the company hopes to extend to homeless people across the country. Let's hope they take advantage of this offering.

Hey, I surely hope they come on down to New Orleans!! We're putting up camps - camp cities - to help the homeless since Katrina. And since we've put up these camps, we've seen hundreds more homeless some who were and many who were NOT affected by the storm - the word is out in the homeless community that the city will now find housing for all of these people. So come on down, homeless people!! New Orleans is taking care of EVERYONE!! Of course, we do not have free voicemail, so they may want to stay where they are.

many homeless people are mentally ill . . . and many of those are schizophrenic . . . and a good many of these people have auditory hallucinations, i.e. . . . they hear voices . . . one can only conclude that giving these people voicemail will certainly result in an exacerbation of their condition . . . this is tantamount to taking away their Thorazine . . . where is the dignity!!
