Go to college, get a free MacBook

I don't know about you, but I'm beginning to see a trend here. Last week we heard freshmen attending Abilene Christian University this fall were all getting a free iPhone or iPod Touch to help them with their future education. This week, Oklahoma Christian University announced it too will be issuing shiny Apple products to incoming freshmen and faculty members who attend orientation this summer.

It appears new students and faculty will be getting their hands on a brand new MacBook, and their choice of an iPhone or an iPod Touch. TechWeb says the private school handed out Dell PCs in 2004 to every student and faculty member, and this year they decided a MacBook would be better due to its ability to run multiple operating systems. What's even sweeter is existing students who want to switch to Macs, can trade their used laptops for a new MacBook.

This is great news for new students attending these generous universities, but I'm beginning to wonder if schools are just trying to attract new students by offering free shiny Apple products.

These Apple products are not free. Either the students who are enrolled at that school are paying for them in higher tuition or the taxpayers of that state are picking up the tab in state funding. My wife gets the Apple Store education discount and I just bought a MacBook Pro and even with the discount all Apple products are very expensive.

Wow, Apple marketing is doing a great job catching attention. I've already seen furniture stores give away Apple ipods. Soon, I expect to see Apple products given away for car and house purchasers and while they are great products, would you go to a given college because of a Macbook giveaway? I have a hard time believing such a huge decision is affected by a laptop giveaway. Do you think?

If you hand out Apple products to college students, then it is very likely those students will be Apple customers for years, perhaps even for life. This fundamental marketing concept is why credit card companies try to become the only credit card a student carries. Also having almost everyone on campus using the same type of computer makes life much easier for their IT & support folks. Certainly parents or taxpayers are footing the bill, but that doesn't make this completely foolish. BTW - MACs routinely boot up with Windows & Linux these days, making them compatible with a lot of software.
