Protect your GPS system from thieves

Portable Global Positioning Systems are among the fastest selling car accessories today. They also happen to make you a target. GPS theft continues to rise.

Because these often-expensive portable devices are impossible to trace, they've become popular among thieves, who can easily sell them on the street. GPS devices have been stolen from ambulances and FBI cars, so don't think for a minute yours is safe.

Here are a few tips that can help keep your GPS in your possession,

Hide the goods
Most reported thefts are from people who left their GPS mount and system in plain sight, so it's important to hide both pieces in your trunk or glove compartment when you get out of the car. You might also want to keep other gadgets, like iPods, out of sight to keep thieves at bay.

Wipe down the windshield
GPS devices use suction cups that leave big rings on the windshield. Even if you hide your system, you run the risk of becoming a target unless you wipe off the telltale suction marks. Pack a few wet towelettes, and when the ring becomes noticeable, wipe down your windshield.

Alternatively, mount the device on your dashboard to keep it out of direct sight and to avoid the windshield rings.

Take it with you
If you value your GPS so much, take it with you when you leave the car. It may be hugely inconvenient, but you at least get to keep your system-even if thieves break in.

Note your serial number...
...And keep it handy, in case your GPS does get stolen. Many times the police are able to recover stolen items, so you'll need some sort of proof that you're the owner. You might want to take a photo, too, for reference.

Mountable GPS systems are especially risky, because they're easy to spot when you don't take them down. The best thing you can do to secure your system is to buy one that's in-dash with a retractable screen.

You guys are riduculous. GPS units are cheap now . . . . thanks to technology. As for people who swear they don't use them, these hard working people have a life which prohibits them from seeing the beautiful world in a truly simplistic fashion. My analogy to this technology is similar to "why walk when I can ride my bicyle." If you don't believe that portable gps-navigation units are cheap Look at buy.com: http://www.buy.com/prod/nextar-x3i-3-5-portable-gps-with-mp3-and-3-interchangeable-face-plates/q/loc/111/207910911.html I got one for $100. Not as good as the one advertised above but mine gets the job done. As a part time Real Estate Agent a GPS-navigation unit is a blessing. As a person who works grave yards and can't see street signs to well in the dark, this gpsnav is also a blessing. A GPS-nav unit is almost as great an invention as the cell phone . . . . Well, perhaps the gps-navs are better than an ordinary cell phone . . . time will tell. Eventually GPS-nav units will become so common that they will not be worth stealing - if a cell phone is accidentally lost by its owner, today, people who find them turn them in at the counter. In return the rightful owner of cell phone will call his or her lost cell phone and will come to realize lost cell phone has actually been found at an establishment. Basically, what I'm trying to emphasize is that this technology is allowable for everyone to afford at a low cost - unlike cell phones, no monthly payments. I no longer have to waste paper by printing maps which were especially wrong for long trips from the start. Todays Cheap GPS actually saves you time and money. So for you guys that like to waste time printing maps or visiting AAA for pre-made maps, you people are missing out on a great technology which was given to the world as a gift by america's own US Army. Those same 24 satellites used for todays GPS-nav units in space had the the ex-regime of russia, the USSR, believe it was the United States's Star Wars project during the cold war. Life was much simplier during the cold war - it was this or that or good or bad; not much to choose from. But today, thanks to technology, we all have more options. Today may not be simplier as the cold war, but if you actually use your brain to think and create an acceptable and accountable choices - you may make the right decision which will help you towards a blessed future. Only time will tell, and when that time has passed and you actually learn from it, you grow to appreciate the power of history and what it entails in return - knowledge of one's self. Go get one. It's much simpler to use than a computer and even more hackable than a computer.

I haven't had the chance to look over the details of a GPS system I only worry about how it'll effect my driving skills, the wait time for a new screen might be heck but it's still something to look into.
