Protect your GPS system from thieves

Portable Global Positioning Systems are among the fastest selling car accessories today. They also happen to make you a target. GPS theft continues to rise.

Because these often-expensive portable devices are impossible to trace, they've become popular among thieves, who can easily sell them on the street. GPS devices have been stolen from ambulances and FBI cars, so don't think for a minute yours is safe.

Here are a few tips that can help keep your GPS in your possession,

Hide the goods
Most reported thefts are from people who left their GPS mount and system in plain sight, so it's important to hide both pieces in your trunk or glove compartment when you get out of the car. You might also want to keep other gadgets, like iPods, out of sight to keep thieves at bay.

Wipe down the windshield
GPS devices use suction cups that leave big rings on the windshield. Even if you hide your system, you run the risk of becoming a target unless you wipe off the telltale suction marks. Pack a few wet towelettes, and when the ring becomes noticeable, wipe down your windshield.

Alternatively, mount the device on your dashboard to keep it out of direct sight and to avoid the windshield rings.

Take it with you
If you value your GPS so much, take it with you when you leave the car. It may be hugely inconvenient, but you at least get to keep your system-even if thieves break in.

Note your serial number...
...And keep it handy, in case your GPS does get stolen. Many times the police are able to recover stolen items, so you'll need some sort of proof that you're the owner. You might want to take a photo, too, for reference.

Mountable GPS systems are especially risky, because they're easy to spot when you don't take them down. The best thing you can do to secure your system is to buy one that's in-dash with a retractable screen.

Once, I had something out of my vehicle stolen and since then, have engraved the last four digits of my social on an inconspicous place on my items of value. This way, if they do get stolen, the only way that it can truly be covered is by sanding it out. Serial numbers can be taken off more easier than engraving it.

With todays technology GPS's can be traced. Just look at cell phones. And if I were a manufacture, I would have a feature on there that would allow me to call the company and report it stolen. That way they could trace it as soon as the power came back on.

Tell us something that we don't know! I'm sorry but this is a worthless article. I came here hoping for some decent advice, but saw nothing but common sense advice that I already knew. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

They need (we need) to make the punishment steeper. A Smith and Wesson would look good to any of you while standing in front of a broken window and missing stuff you bought with your hard earned money. I hate travelling to big cities like Chicago - I have to take the chargers with me as well with their LED's saying HEY! I have electronic gadgets in my car! Come steal them....Palm Pilot, GPS, Smart Phone and MP3 Player. MAKE THE PENALTY WORSE I say...

COME ON! Really! Does everyone need a GPS to tell them where the local grocery store is? I have had one for a few years in Chicago and only use it when I go out of town and have no clue where I'm going. Every day I see people in town with their GPS' mounted proudly on their windshields, pull into McDonalds, and go back to work. Whatever happened to amking U-Turns or actually going somewhere and not really caring if it was on a map or had a Starbucks. I think Common sense is the biggest misnomer here and it is your own fault if you have a GPS that gets stolen.

buy a map like I do and preplan your trips. You save 400 bucks cuz you dont need the darn thing, unless ur a mental patient or a blonde :)

The first sad truth is that using a map and pre-planning a route is nice, except that with all the road construction, detours, accidents, etc....not to mention calls from the office to re-route to emergencies/changes in appointments, etc....its slow to impossible to do that for all situations....and a GPS does it instantly. The second sad truth is that the darn things are for CONVENIENCE and SPEEDING things up/saving time....so wiping off suction cup mounts, or even taking it and hiding it (And the radar detector, and the phone, and the lap top, and the chargers, and the camera, and so forth).....eat up a lot of valuable time. Quite frankly, tinted windows that keep prying eyes from picking out easy targets, combined with a sunshade that covers the windshield...pretty much hides my entire interior such that there's no inviting siren call being played by my electronic loot. That way - I can leave the chargers plugged in, actually CHARGING things...and the other stuff more or less where I use it...and come back, and its all still there...plus, the interior is cooler due to the tinting and shading. :D

QUOTE: "Because these [GPS] often-expensive portable devices are impossible to trace, they've become popular among thieves, who can easily sell them on the street. " I have a question.... If it's a GPS system? Why aren't we able to track the same item that tells us where we are when in the car? Common sense. You would think that something as expensive as this would already have a tracker in there. (Yea, its creepy that they would track our devices-hence our cars...but donesn't Onstar already do that?)

jeffxine, I must say if you're in sales or such it's a handy tool. But for most people they are just an expesive gadget. But one word of advice, don't program in your actual address as home. If you're out eating or what not theives can steal the GPS and hit the home feature and follow the directions there and rob you as you are enjoying your meal, knowing you're not there.

My few cents.... 1. Yes, this article was useless. 2. I admit that unless you travel a LOT for work, which I do, by car, then you really don't even need a GPS. I LOVE mine, and it has gotten me out of some jams. As for the comment by dshnig of getting directions, following directions,,, What is the closest honda reapir shop to where I am going to be next tuesday at 3pm when I am driving across country and break down? You can't plan every step of a vaction, unless you are retired and have nothing better to do and want to live by a schedule. For the few of us who do travel extensively by car, they are WONDERFUL. 3. As for jeffxine's comment about "not really caring", has he/she priced gasoline lately? Getting lost is expensive now and days. AND you can use your GPS to FIND attractions, historical places, and things to do. Plus, there is no one saying that you can't stop along the way.

Anyone that Don't take it with them is more of a moron than a 12 year old. And they should be stolen from the fools...

and Madcow is right...manufacturers ARE making their GPSs trackable incase they are stolen...umm...about time? thats like having to add a "Point at Enemy" sticker on military grade weapons...which IS DONE...what kind of society am i being brought into? in two years my vote is goint to count just the same as the moron that loves to write these articles, and the morons that need to be told to point lethal weapons at enemies...

I DONT HAVE A GPSIN MY CAR TO BE STOLEN. BUT I HAVE HAD A CAR BROKEN INTO FOR A CASE OF BURNED CD'S. SO BASICALLY I SHOULD HIDE EVERYTHING IN MY CAR THAT WAS NOT MADE OR INSTALLED FROM THE FACTORY. THAT'S WHAT INSURANCE IS FOR. DON'T LIVE IN FEAR!!!

  • 23 Posted by crackdogv on Thu Sep 3, 2009 3:30PM EDT Report Abuse

exactly why people have insurance...survival of the fittest, if ur not smart enough to have insurance your screwed when someone breaks into your car for something expensive. Hiding valuables makes u a lower target but people break into random cars (usually the newer or more expensive models) figuring its the best chance of something expensive being easy to access...and dont glove compartments usually come with locks?, cant you lock your trunk? if you have something so valuable than take care of it

I just bought a 2008 Toyota Prius. It is the future. Half electric half gas. 44 + mpg. Star Trec controls. The large screen "GPS" is multi function, and is built deeply into the dash. Super alarm if tampered with. we are truly blessed with an afordable car. They don't advertize them much in Florida because they sell before they unload them on the lot. I failed to put a deposit on a blue one I liked. They closed at 9pm and it wasn't sold. we got there the next day when the opened and the 6 I saw the night before were gone. We waited for the delivery truck fought the mob and boughta loaded red one. We stepped into the future afordably. The "GPS" is large screen and can be interactive through the steering wheel buttons. Also acts as a back up camera, climate control, engine moniter, and many other inportant modes.

my neighbor had one installed into his saturn idk what kind its one of those sport cars (that i didnt know saturn made) lol it reminds me of a pontiac solstice...they can be deeply ingrain (by the time the thief gets the GPS out in tact w/o damaging it they would have been caught deep!!!)and they even have trackers that locatable incase they are actually stolen my 1995 hand down car has a stereo system that password locks when it loses connection with electronics but then again those can always be duped...but that is another hurtle to jump. good night im tired of poking fun at yahoo articles
