It's been a while since I've written about iPod applications, but today I found
one that would come in handy when you're on the road, and need Internet access
pronto. I'm talking about the wiPod, an iPod-based directory of hotspots created
by Anchor Free. The wiPod is a free download that uses the iPod's notes functionality
to list all the hotspots located within your area. The directory is available
for each state, but you can also download listings from different countries, which
should be great for those traveling abroad.
The company also offers a web-based Wi-Fi/HotSpot Finder that displays all the hotspots in your area on a Google Maps mashup. You simply enter your address or zip code, and the application returns a list of places that offer free wireless Internet access, and shows you where they're located on a map.
The good news is both services mentioned above are free. The bad news is they both display only the free hotspots, and not the paying ones, which would usually be at Starbucks or Borders. Alternatively, you could use something like JWire, which Tom mentions on this post.
