Musicians are definitely set on reaching their fans no matter where they go. Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead released their new albums on their websites, and now Motley Crue is said to become the first band to ever release a new single through a video game. That's right, the glam metal band that brought us "Dr. Feelgood," and "Kickstart My Heart" in the '80s is releasing a new album, and their first single "Saints of Los Angeles" is currently available for download to Rock Band gamers. The single can be purchased via XBox Live or Playstation Store for the low price of 99 cents.

Def Leppard is another band also releasing a new single through a video game. According to Gamespot, the band's lending their songs to Guitar Hero, and releasing a song pack that includes classics like "Rock of Ages," "Photograph," and their upcoming single called "Nine Lives." Guitar Hero III fans can look forward to downloading these songs on Xbox Live on April 24, and May 8 for the Playstation 3.

Next up, Metallica. Rumor has it the heavy metal band is also flirting with the possibility of releasing their next single through Rock Band, and is already talking to MTV Games about it.

I can't say I'm excited about it about either Motley Crue or Def Leppard's new single, but the way these bands are releasing their new songs is definitely unusual.

What about you? Are you ready to rock to any of these songs?

I think it's an interesting way to go about releasing the song. When rock Band first came out the big three entertained the possibility of releasing singles via music games before the were available to buy in any other format. Downside is, you can only play the song in the specific game and if you DO like the song, then you got pony up even more money to listen to it anywhere/time else. Unless they come up with a way to download the track via XBL or the playstation store's websites to your P.C. so you can listen to them there too. But that would be highly unlikely. I still intend to spend the money to try the new Crue song nevertheless. Not so sure about DefLep or any future Metallica songs though..

I'm a music producer and I'm always looking for a new angle when it comes to publishing new projects and artist. It's good to know that the gaming industry is opening more doors to the music industry without a bunch of the usual suspects in the middle of the road trying to block traffic. The dawbcak are just as Mr. Longstrider stated but the pluses outweigh the minuses. As a musician I'm loving it!!!!

Metallica can release whatever they want. I still will not purchase anything from Metallica. Shame on them for going after the fans that made them what they are today.

I think that we will continue to see Rock musicians release their music in different formats to release new audiences. Nine Inch Nails recently released several tracks off of their album "Year Zero" in GarageBand format so that Apple users could remix them however you want. It's pretty funny to fool around with Trent Reznors voice and make him sound like he's on helium!
