Navigation systems are really becoming a driver's must have accessory, so manufacturers
are adding some really sophisticated features to keep people interested. In
Japan, for example, Honda has developed a crime rate detecting GPS that will
search through local police records to alert drivers in real-time if they ever
happen to drive by high crime areas.
The on-board navigation system to be installed in newer Honda cars will specifically warn drivers when they're too close to high risk areas where a good number of cars have been previously stolen, damaged, or broken into according to a report by the AFP. Honda says there are no pending plans to add this feature to navigation systems in the U.S., but I think it would be nice if they did. I can't tell you how many times I've driven by shady areas in the past, only to be told later I was lucky I didn't get my car stolen, or worse yet, shot at.

I smell a lawsuit if it ever hit the US, I know somebody gonna sue over this.
Sad how corporations have caught onto the notion that FEAR sells... I guess the US is not the only country guilty of this.
i think this is a very good idea if used in ft worth it wouldnt even let you get near stop 6 or poly (crackville &crack town)
It's highly unlikely that you are going to be shot "driving by a shady area"...even in Detroit. Besides the fact that I don't think the device warns you about areas where high numbers of violent crimes are taking place. It's all about car theft and somehow they will figure out how to find you liable for damages or theft that might occur parking in a "high risk" area. I agree that it is just creating fear and possibly a way to profit from it. It's ridiculous that you would choose not to continue to your destination because your car might be stolen and if you need to fear getting shot upon arrival, then you must have a darn good reason to go there in the first place.

if you lived in say . . . Detroit . . . you'd have to disable this feature . . . it would be warning you continuously!
