Dreaming of becoming the next American Idol? Well, it's never too early or late
to start working on your singing skills. There are plenty of karaoke sites where
people can sing and build their online fan base, but MySpace users have an easier
way to do this at MySpace Karaoke. That's right, the social networking site just
launched a new karaoke service where people
can sing their heart out and post their recordings on their member profile for
others to view and rate.
In order to use the service, MySpace members have to download a small application to their computer, hook up a microphone, choose a song, and begin recording. There are over 3,000 songs to choose from, including songs from Amy Winehouse, John Legend, and Daughtry. I have to say, the song selection is not bad, and neither is the interface.
Just like with any karaoke service, the lyrics are displayed on the screen, and change color to help users keep up with the song. The embedded player allows you play the three versions of the song: instrumental, artist, and member. You can also add effects, change the settings, and when you're done recording you can share the recording with friends via email or through your profile.
Karaoke enthusiasts using this service can save up to 10 songs at a time in their library, but can upgrade to a premium membership plan if they want to sing and record unlimited songs. Paying members also get to compete with other "Top Performers" and showcase their performance online. MySpace Karaoke is powered by kSolo, which was acquired back in 2006 by News Corp, so some of you may already be familiar with this service.
There are plenty of karaoke online services including SIMS on Stage (formerly known as SlingShot), and Bix, so MySpace Karaoke has plenty of competition in this arena. Karaoke without video is just too boring, so maybe that will change once they roll out a rumored video option that will include a split-screen feature for duets.
