Could you shut down your computer for a whole day?

I'm all for shutting down the computer on weekends, and that's exactly what I'll be doing on Shutdown Day.

Shutdown Day is a global Internet experiment whose goal is to get people to think about their excessive use of computers, and how this has changed their lives. The challenge began innocently enough by a group of tech-savvy men who challenged each other—and eventually the world—to turn off their computers for 24 hours just to see what would happen.

As it turned out, last year the experimental online campaign itself garnered international media attention that drove over a million visitors to the site, and prompted 65,000 people to take the pledge of powering off for one day.

Today Shutdown Day is a non-profit organization in Canada that continues to remind people about the importance of stepping away from the computer to make time for themselves, their family and friends.

This year the organization is planning a number of outside activities to get people away from computers, so those who take the pledge to shut down on May 3rd, will find a list of events on the site.

Do you think you can shut down your computer for a day? I bet you could.

If you want to find things to do in your area that don't involve a computer, check out places like Meetup, Zvents, Upcoming, and Eventful. Those who live in the Bay Area could always head out the Maker Faire happening this weekend, or find a Cinco de Mayo celebration in the area for some good margaritas.

I'll shut down my computer for one day if Obama and Clinton will shut up or five minutes. That's my offer.

I spend five days a week sitting in a 6x8 cloth covered box working at a computer. I went to Mexico for four nights (Puerto Penasco). No PC. No cell signal. Lots of shrimp and beer. I'm going again.
