Eye-Fi, the winner of our
Last Gadget Standing competition, is adding two new cards to its product
line. Eye-Fi is basically a memory card with wireless capabilities that allows
you to upload photos straight from your camera to a computer or photo-sharing
site. Robin found a few issues
with it when she reviewed it earlier this year, but overall she gave it
a thumbs-up.
Until now, there was only one 2GB Eye-Fi card being sold for $99, but the company changed its name to Eye-Fi Share, and announced it will be adding the Eye-Fi Explore and the Eye-Fi Home. In terms of storage, a 2GB capacity is still the standard and they all will work with Mac and PC. Prices and features vary, so here's a quick look at each card:
Eye-Fi Explore is the most expensive of all with a $129 price tag that the company justifies with features like geotagging using Skyhook's global Wi-Fi Positioning System, and Wi-Fi access at over 10,000 Wayport hotspots for one year. Seriously, with a card like this one all you have to do start sharing your vacation photos online is stop by any McDonalds hotspot, which are practically everywhere.
Eye-Fi Share is the original wireless memory card that lets you automatically upload your photos straight to your photo-sharing site, social network, blog, or computer using your home Wi-Fi network. Price is still $99.
Eye-Fi Home is a bit cheaper at $79, but only allows users to upload photos to their computer wirelessly. Unfortunately, it won't upload images from your camera to photo-sharing sites or work in hotspots, so this one is basically for people who don't want to (or don't know how) manually upload photos via cables, cradles, or card readers to their computer.
Expect these cards on the market starting June 6, just in time for summer. You'll be able to find them at places like Amazon, Costco, Apple, and Wal-Mart.
