Study says mobile phone use could harm unborn children

Last year, I wrote about a strange product called MummyWraps, created for pregnant women who wanted to protect their unborn child from electro-smog, and while that seemed a little paranoid at the time, a recent study found that pregnant women who use mobile phones are likely to give birth to children with behavioral problems.

According to the the study led by the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark, pregnant women using mobile phones two or three times a day increased their chances of having babies with hyperactivity and behavioral problems that would affect their conduct, emotions, and relationships by the time they reached school age. Those odds increased even more if the children themselves used a phone before reaching the age of seven.

The study which surveyed the mothers of 13,159 children born in Denmark took scientists by surprise, especially UCLA's Professor Leeka Kheifets who just three years ago wrote there was no evidence that casual cell phone use had any adverse health effects on humans.

Of course, there are many other factors that could've caused behavioral problems in these children, so this is one topic we're sure to hear more about. In the meantime, if you're pregnant, you might want to take some precautions and limit your cell phone use, and those wondering about getting a cell phone for their six year old may want to wait a bit longer, just to be safe.

It's not the cell phone technology that's causing the emotional problems, its the social stimulus and expectations of interactivity that make people high strung.

i was wondering too what was the definition of hyperactivity and what behavioural problems they were refering to. most "hyperactive" kids are just normally vivacious. most "sleep problems" are the parents problems to deal with the type of children's sleep... still, it seems a good point to wait until adolescence to give a person a cell-phone. and it is really liberating to be without a cell-phone or a computer for some days. have you tried?
