Watching movies on a tiny iPod screen doesn't have to be a pain in the neck,
at least not on United Airlines. The airline that recently introduced
lie-flat business class seats on international flights just debuted a new feature
that makes its in-flight entertainment system compatible with iPods and iPhones.
The system, developed by Panasonic Avionics, now features a 30-pin connector that plugs straight into an iPod or iPhone, allowing passengers to watch content stored on the device on a bigger 15.4-inch LCD screen.
Apparently, United's in-flight entertainment system is the first to offer this type of iPod connectivity in addition to movies on-demand, XM radio, and games. The first iPod-compatible in-flight entertainment system debuted Monday on a flight from Washington D.C. to Zurich, and others will soon follow.
In a press release, United said it has plans to reconfigure its entire fleet of international aircraft over the next two years with high-tech goodness including this iPod connectivity option. Sadly, this luxury will initially only be available to business and first-class passengers, so if you're flying coach, you'd better bring your laptop along.Â
