How does your salary compare?

We've all probably wondered at one time or another how our salary compares to others in our field. A new website is offering just that type of information, and more. At Glassdoor.com, all the data is provided by members of the site who anonymously rate their company, write reviews, and volunteer salary information.

Those who sign up for membership complete a review of the company they work for, or have worked for in the past three years. After completing the review, members have free access to 3,300 reviews of more than 250 companies in the Silicon Valley and New York area.

Glassdoor currently has salary details and reviews for four major companies in the San Francisco Bay area. The site is slowly expanding to cover other cities, but in the meantime, visitors can get a sneak peek of what to expect.

Something like this could be very useful when you're considering a new company—some are already calling it the "TripAdvisor" for the workplace—but I somehow doubt people will be rushing to become members, especially if they're required to reveal too much information about themselves to gain access.

What do you think?

I would be very dubious about making comments about any company I worked for on the net. The possiblity of any thing getting back to an employer, though small, is possible and not worth the risk in our economy where companies are struggling and downsizing!
