Virgin Mobile USA now joins the competition by offering an unlimited calling flat-rate plan. AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint recently introduced all-you-can-eat calling plans that start at $99.99, but Virgin Mobile's plan was unveiled at $79.99 without the need of a two-year contract, or activation fees.

PC World says the "Totally Unlimited" prepaid plan will be offered starting July 1st, and will also include unlimited texting and messaging service for an additional $10 per month, which is not bad considering most kids today prefer to send text messages.

This is good news for those who don't want to sign a two-year contract, or can't get service from other providers due to bad credit. The bad news is you don't have much a phone selection, but I suppose having the freedom to end your service at anytime without incurring termination fees is a greater incentive.

This should be a good plan for students heading back to school this fall.

If I had to pay that much, my son would be paying for his own cell phone @ college. We use a Sprint family plan that gives us 3 phones (which we had to pay something for up front), unlimited texting, and about 3,000 minutes for something like $100 per month. We do get a discount arranged by my employer, but Sprint offers the same discounts to LOTS of companies. Check when you get your next phone if they have a special rate for your employer, insurance company, buying club, credit card, age, etc. Folks who need more than a 1,000 minutes a month know who they are, and look for plans to meet their needs (perhaps these ones).
