Sony introduces the thinnest LCD display ever

At CES, we saw a crop of ultra-thin displays we have yet to see in retail stores, but today Sony unveiled an LCD display at IFA that would blow everyone out of the water in a thinnest display competition. How you ask? Well Sony has created a display they say is as thick as a CD case!

Network World says the 9.9mm thick BRAVIA ZX1 is able to be so thin because it uses an LED backlighting system and is probably the first one ever to do so. Instead of shrinking down the backlight found behind most LCD displays, Sony completely replaced it with LED lights mounted around the edge of the panel that shine enough light through the screen. Apparently this method works quite well, and in the process, it eliminates all the extra bulk behind the TV that doesn't need to be there.

The thing that worries people when mounting flat displays on the wall is making big holes and running all those wires behind the wall. Well Sony thought about that when it designed this model, because this particular display comes with a wireless media receiver that transmits HD content wirelessly to your TV. You basically set the box anywhere in the room, as long as it's within 30 meters of the TV, and connect all the other components to it. That's it. No more holes in wall or ugly boxes sitting under the sexy display.

Unfortunately, this TV will initially retail for about $5,000 and it will debut in Japan first starting November 10. It will be available in 40-inch, 46-inch or 52-inches with a special mounting bracket and colored bezels to match it too.

Wireless thin(nest) screen TV? Bout time! The 5g price tag seems steep- but it's 2/3 what I paid couple years back for my 103lbs (bout 47kg) 62" flat-panel sitting above the fireplace. May not seem like much, but that awkward box was a monster to emplace. The weight/price isn't the key factor that piqued my interest. It's the 'no wires' part. That is a huge plus! The family has wireless everything zooming through the house. I am curious -how will this Sony will avoid disruption of the digital signal?

This article says nothing about picture quality. Thin is cool, but I don't care if the TV takes up half the room as long as the picture is phenomenal. That's why I own plasma. It's heavy, but it's the best there is.
