Netbooks are the new hotness in portable computing, and every company out there
is jumping on the netbook bandwagon, but we must not forget the device that
started it all. Some might say the EEE PC ushered in the netbook era, but I
think the XO laptop just did that when it was introduced a couple of years ago.
The One Laptop Per Child Foundation developed the XO laptop for children in the developing countries. The netbook is built to endure any type of weather, has Wi-Fi capabilities, no moving parts inside, a webcam, and is powered by simply pulling a string. Last holiday season, the OLPC went on sale as part of a "Give 1 Get 1" promotion, and today, Nicholas Negroponte has confirmed the program is coming back at the end of the year through Amazon.
According to the Boston Globe, the XO laptop will be sold through Amazon to avoid delivery problems the organization encountered last year, and it's being reported the OLPC foundation is working on a Windows XP version. Amazon has not confirmed or made any announcements regarding the promotion, and probably won't until the site is ready, according to Negraponte.
Pricing hasn't been confirmed, but it's likely the two for one deal will set you back $399 again. Details to come.

The partnership with Amazon is a year too late - ain't nobody gonna buy the thing now that Negroponte has pissed off the linux weenies and Sugar has flopped as the "revolutionary teaching tool" it was once billed as.
