Cyber therapy is nothing
new, but In the digital age Brits are one text away from getting the psychological
help they think they need. Believe it or not downloadable self-help is here, and the folks
over at Switched
found a new service in the UK called My
Mobile Guru that's already offering downloadable 5-12 minute therapy sessions
for a small fee.
Topics like anger management, alcoholism, infidelity, depression, and cancer are all covered by Dr. Gary Siva, who says techniques used to deal with some of these issues are often the same, but are they?
Philip Hodson, a member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, disagrees with him, and tells the Guardian the relationship between the client and therapist is what helps treatment work. "You can't have a relationship with a mobile phone download. All you could do on a mobile download is what you can do with a leaflet, or old-fashioned agony aunting. That could never be called therapy," says Hodson.
The website has a list of the top ten downloads which includes "My relationship isn't working," "I have just been diagnosed with cancer," and "I'm being bullied at work." All ten sessions can be downloaded to your computer, your mobile, or sent to a friend for about $5. Who said therapy wasn't cheap?
