A few years ago I was happy to hear affordable consumer digital cameras were
available with 10-megapixel sensors, but this is the year of the 14-megapixel
sensor and Canon is launching its very own PowerShot SD990 IS Digtial Elph camera.
This particular camera will be available in a limited-edition red to commemorate
the 100 millionth PowerShot camera manufactured; but beyond the vibrant red
exterior, you'll find a point-and-shoot with a 14.7 megapixel sensor, 3.7x optical
zoom, and 2.5-inch LCD. At this point I'm not sure why they keep adding more
megapixels to cameras, but those interested in poster-sized images can buy the
SD990 for about $400.
If you don't need all those megapixels and want to save $100, then check out
the other new digicam Canon is releasing in October called the SD880 IS Digital
Elph. This one sports a 10 megapixels sensor, 4x-wide angle optical zoom, 3.0-inch LCD,
and is available in two-toned black/silver or gold/brown combinations. Both
cameras apparently feature Canon's DIGIC 4 image processors which improves the
signal processing speed and image quality even in low light situations. Look
for these two compact digicams in stores next month.

With so many pixels, digital zoom may actually provide reasonable compensation for the relatively small optical zoom ratio, if the software is good. I hope the testers check this out.
