The Republican vice presidential
candidate and most searched
for woman on the internet is the latest victim of email hacking conducted
by a group of hackers that calls itself "Anonymous." Some of the governor's
personal photos, phone numbers, contact addresses, and emails were initially
posted on Wikileaks.org after the site received a zip file with all the contents. They were then reposted in several blogs including Gawker after the Wikileaks went down.
Secret Service officials are on the case, but many suspect it will be difficult to find the hackers in question. There are many theories circulating online as to how these hackers gained access to Palin's account. The AP believes that the group used public information about Palin to trick the system into revealing her password, while others think they used a keystroke program. However, a URL seen in these screenshots may actually be the piece of incriminating evidence the feds need.
The Register thinks Gabriel Ramuglia, the operator of the proxy service used by the group, may be able to look at his logs and provide authorities with each user's IP address, thanks to the full string of characters found in the URLs. The logs aren't kept for very long, so authorities will have to move fast if they plan to follow this lead.
Rick Davis, a campaign manager for the Republican party, issued a statement condemning the incident. "This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."
