Saudi Arabia-based STC wants to redesign the router by turning it into a more eye-pleasing home accessory like a flower vase. Hoping to bridge the gap between lifestyle and technology, Saudi Telecom has integrated land-line, VoIP, LAN, and DSL connections on the back of this device.

The STC Livebox router-vase combo holds your artificial flowers to beautify that dark corner hiding all those cables. It looks and sounds crazy, but I think Martha Stewart would approve. I really doubt you can pour water into the vase to keep real flowers alive, but anything's possible these days. Personally, I can't wait for the completely wireless home entertainment system to arrive, so I can stop staring at that heap of cables. I assume this vase is still a concept, but since the idea has generated some buzz I expect to see more eye pleasing routers like this one in the future.

What do you think? Is this a good or bad idea?

    I think it's a very fun idea. And I, too, am tired of looking at a heap of cables.

    If you put the cables into a duct, in behind a drywall (plaster wall) you can have the router at head height. That gives you improved WiFi coverage, and.... picture frames. For cheap, you put a printed picture on the front. High rollers go for LCD, and the ability to actually configure the router, WITHOUT remote connecting (just plug in a USB keyboard).

    another worthless idea come to light. If you don't like the "dark corner hiding all those cables", then install them correctly the first time. Why clutter up the "dark corner hiding all those cables" with yet another piece of non-utilitarian garbage? All it will do is collect dust and debris and lend itself to even more housekeeping chores. Here's an idea! Rout the cables intelligently, thoughtfully, the first time and they won't be a mess.
