Segway's New Rides

Segways just can't shake off this image of being a bit geeky. Maybe it's the whole Human Transporter description, or the fact that they do a look like something out of Minority Report. But all that may change with the release of the new Segway models that now make Segway gliding more like a sport or "very similar to skiing", as Segway's Chief Technology Officer Doug Field says.

Segway has launched two new transporters, the i2 and x2. Both models have a new technology called LeanSteer that steers you in the direction you lean into. The handlebars tilt to the left or right so you can easily direct the Segway in any direction you want. They still travel at a top speed of 12.5 mph, but who's in a rush?

You gotta love the new InfoKey system that alerts you wirelessly if someone decides to mess with your Segway PT parked outside. The built-in alarm system will sound-off if anyone attempts to move it, and it will also lock the wheels and send you a visual alert wirelessly to your Infokey controller.

For adventurous types, the X2 is a lot more rugged for off-road cruising, and will go for 12 miles on a single battery charge, while the i2 will travel up to 24 miles on a single charge.

I'd love to test one out, but until then, I guess I'll have to wait until they start appearing at Segway sightseeing tour sites.

What do you think? Is the new Segway better than the old models?

ooo I'd love to have one... but they're notoriously expensive!
