Sync Your Cell Phone Data

Reader JlGoldman1 wants to know if there is a tip or workaround to save your cell phone data without paying a monthly fee to your carrier or another service.

This question is in regard to a post about cell phone backup services provided by U.S Carriers. The main concern for readers seemed to be the recurring monthly charge.

I offered an alternative to paying a monthly fee by suggesting a few devices that would also do the job without monthly fees, and my second alternative is data syncing software to store cell phone data on your computer.

Here is a list of this software:

  • DataPilot Cell Phone Data Transfer Suite: This suite does more than just create a backup of your phone book. It also lets your create and import ringtones, edit images, and check emails on-the-go. You can use this software with up to eight different phone models. It includes up to 9 data cables for different phones.
  • Mobile Action Handset Manager: Lets you transfer and edit your contact lists, pictures, videos, and also works as a mobile phone modem. Compatible with most phones models.
  • Future Dial's Snap Sync: Also allows you to edit and transfer contacts between your cell phone and PC. Compatible with over 270 cell phones. Cable is sold separately.
  • iSync 2 for Mac: Included with Mac OSX Tiger, this software syncs with Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones via Bluetooth or USB.

Before you buy this type of software make sure it comes with any necessary cables you need or else you'll end up spending more money. You also want to make sure the software is compatible with your phone.

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to post them in the comments section below. Anyone used the software mentioned in this article? What was your experience?

I would like to stress the importance of making sure the software comes with cables compatible with your phone, because otherwise they can be hard or impossible to find. Also, make sure that the software AND the cable work with YOUR phone. Other than that, great suggestions for programs, and easy to find, too!

Do what I did. Get a Palm Treo. It is a little bulky but all your contacts and appointments are backed up to your computer. The phone works great. Dump your PDA and cell phone for this fantastic gadget.

I can't get a dial tone on my cell phone. The rotory seems to be stuck too. Also... Is it possible to get a longer cord? I would like to talk outside, but there is no where to plug it in.

That Datapilot software really really sucks!! If you decide to go that direction, check into the store's return policy where you buy the software. They will most likely not want to give you a refund or exchange. My suggestion is to get a Nokia phone which comes with free software that will sync your data. C'mon other cell phone makers (Motorola), get with the program. People rely on your products to make their lives easier not harder.

I have a Siemens S66 and I got the mobile phone manager software from Siemens for free. The software came with a backup utility that works great. All I had to buy was a USB data cable for under ten dollars. I back up my phone every week or so. Who needs to pay to have a carrier save personal data when you can do it yourself much cheaper and infinitely more secure.

"That Datapilot software really really sucks!!" I agree. I paid good money for it and it only downloaded partial and corrupt data. No support available from DataPilot either.

I totally had a get rich quick idea to transfer data quickly to and from cell phones (mainly the phone book)! I guess several have beat me to it.
