You've probably heard some buzz about a Nintendo DS game called Brain Age that trains your brain every day. I've been waiting for the release of new Nintendo DS Lite to buy the game, and I'm hooked.
My first attempt really bummed me out because it told me my brain age was...50! What an insult to my brain age! But after training for the past week, I've managed to get my brain age down to 30, which makes me feel a lot better. The goal is to get your brain age to the lowest possible number, with 20 being the lowest.
According to the good Dr. Ryuta Kawashima (also your Brain Age guide) brain function decreases as we age. This game helps you train your Prefrontal Cortex with quick games that help your brain stay in top shape.
There are four different modes in the game: Quick Play, Daily Training, Soduku and Download. You want to warm up with the Daily Training games before doing your Brain Age Check which is what records your daily Brain Age scores. It will only record one score per day, so do this wisely.
I only had trouble doing the The Stroop test. The quick game flashes four words—blue, black, red and yellow—in different colors on each side of the screen. The goal is to say the color–not the word—into the microphone. The voice recognition feature had some problems picking up the word blue when I said it. I later found out it was a recurring problem other players had.
You'll be surprised by how easy the games are, but the trick is to increase your speed to get a good score in some games. My favorite game is the memorization game that displays about 30 words for two minutes, then it gives you three minutes to write them down one-by-one on the touchscreen.
If you like solving puzzles, Soduku, and games that make you think, then this is a fun game to have.
